Donald Sutherland (“The Hunger Games”) and Jaeden Martell (“Knives Out”) have signed on for the leading roles in the new film adaptation of Stephen King’s short story “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone” for Blumhouse Productions and Netflix.
Boasting a “Stand By Me”-style tone and taken from King’s 2020 novella “If It Bleeds,” the story follows a young boy in Maine as he befriends an old and retired billionaire named Mr. Harrigan, the pair first bonding together through an iPhone.
When Mr. Harrigan dies, the teen puts the phone in his pal’s pocket before burial and when the lonely youth leaves his dead friend a message, he is shocked to get a return text from beyond the grave.
The feature will be written and directed by John Lee Hancock (“The Blind Side,” “Saving Mr. Banks”) and produced by Ryan Murphy, Jason Blum, and Carla Hacken. Filming begins this month for a 2022 debut.
Both Sutherland and Martell have been in King adaptations before, the former played Richard Straker in the TV mini-series version of “Salem’s Lot” while the latter played young Bill Benbrough in both of the “IT” movies.
