Unfortunately, we do not know when the first SSD carriers that could use the newer and much faster standard will appear. A few days ago, however, we mentioned the company Kioxia, which is testing a prototype of a semiconductor medium using the interface. We do not know what controller this medium was based on, but its preliminary results are more than satisfactory, achieving a sequential reading result of 14,000 MB / s. At the same time, this medium offers noticeably lower latency in read and write operations. Meanwhile, the Phison company, known primarily for the production of controllers for SSDs, boasted about the first details about their latest product.
Phison revealed the first details about its new controller E26, which is the basis of PCIe 5.0 SSD carriers. The start of shipment of the controller will be in the second half of next year.

Phison E26, because that is the name of the newest controller, will be available only in the second mid-2022. It is therefore uncertain whether the next-generation SSDs using this controller will be available for sale in 2022. However, if they do appear, they will initially be prepared for the server market. We know that the new Phison E26 controller will support PCIe Dual Port interface, SR-IOV virtualization and ZNS (SSD Zoned Namespaces, intelligent data storage on SSD).

The new Phison E26 controller will double the sequential read reading, up to a maximum of 16,000 MB / s. The manufacturer also declares full support for the newest and fastest NAND memory interfaces, ie ONFI 5.x and Toggle 5.x. Therefore, a very efficient and refined controller for the new PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD carriers is being prepared. We will wait at least a year for the final results.
