(Burkina Faso’s military coup on Monday was another in West Africa and the Sahel-torn conflict, where armies are increasingly removing civilian administrations due to their alleged inefficiencies.

French and Russian trolls fight in Africa

Burkina Faso has joined the ranks of several countries in the region that are now ruled by military juntas.

In neighboring Mali, Colonel Asimi Goita overthrew in August 2020 the elected President Ibrahim B. ubakar Kate. He then overthrew the civilian administration in a second coup last May.

The Guinean army also overthrew President-elect Alfa Conde in September 2021

From Afghanistan to Vienna: the danger of ID is far greater than expected

Chad is also ruled by a junta led by Mahamat Idris Debbie Itno, an army general who took power in April last year after his father – the former leader of the Sahel state was killed on the battlefield.

The conspirators justify their actions by pointing out the deep dysfunction of the administrations they are overthrowing.

Why the events in Mali are important for Europe as well

In Guinea, Conde was ousted after months of growing discontent, including deadly protests against his rule.

As a reason for the capture of power in Mali the army pointed to the “trampling” n and civil rights, as well as widespread corruption.

In the Sahel, military coups often cite failures in resolving the conflict with jihadists.

Islamist militants devastate much of the vast semi-desert region, leading to a riot that first erupted in Mali in 2012 and then spread to Burkina Faso and Niger.

Despite international support, poor countries from the Sahel region fail to stop the violence.
