Anticipating strong demand, French automotive suppliers are setting up factories to produce tens of thousands of fuel cells over the next few years.
The hydrogen vehicle market expects exponential growth: 200,000 cars in 2025 and up to 2 million in 2030. These forecasts call for a massification of production on-board fuel cells (PaC) that will convert the hydrogen in the tank into electricity for the engine. In France, equipment manufacturers Plastic Omnium and Faurecia are embarking on industrialization. In March 2021, the former finalized its joint venture with Germany’s ElringKlinger to prepare for mass production of PEM (proton exchange membrane) technology PaCs. Called Ekpo Fuel Cell Technologies, this entity 60% owned by ElringKlinger and 40% by Plastic Omnium aims to capture 15% of the global fuel cell market by 2030.
