The Best ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Easter Eggs You May Have Missed

As with every Marvel movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home is absolutely jam-packed with Easter eggs and references to the wider MCU.

We already knew that it would be bringing back some familiar villains, but there are other surprise appearances in store, as well as connections to the comics and other MCU movies and TV shows.

Whether you’re prepping yourself for a rewatch or checking if you missed any, we’ve delved into No Way Home to pick out the best Easter eggs and references in store. This isn’t a comprehensive list, but a selection of our favorites.

Needless to say, there are going to be some major spoilers ahead, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, head this way for our spoiler-free review instead.

1. Rogers: The Musical

Marvel StudiosDisney+

Sadly, we don’t get to see any more of Rogers: The Musical in No Way Home, but there is a quick reference to the (surely epic) musical that we saw in the first episode of Hawkeye.

As Spider-Man and MJ swing away from trouble in the opening scene, they go past a huge advertisement for the musical. No Way Home does take place before Hawkeye though as it picks up straight from Far From Home‘s ending around summer 2024, whereas the Disney+ show is set in December 2024.

2. Matt Murdock… and others

Marvel Studios

You won’t have missed him, but we just thought we’d confirm that, yes, that was Charlie Cox back as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil.

We assume it’s the same person we saw in the Netflix show as Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige previously confirmed that if Daredevil was coming back, Cox would be playing him and the character wouldn’t be recast. (Feige obviously knew at this time that Cox was already back in the MCU.)

Given how surprised Peter is when Matt catches a brick thrown through the window, the lawyer has clearly been better at hiding his identity than Peter as he clearly doesn’t know he’s sitting with Daredevil.

He’s not the only surprise appearance as No Way Home also features the long-speculated return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Like every villain who returns, they’re the same versions we met before.

3. Dum-E

dume in iron man series

Marvel Studios

The last time we saw Tony Stark’s mechanical arm robot Dum-E was when it was helping to pack up Stark Tower in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

No Way Home reveals that Happy Hogan decided to keep Dum-E around and took him to his home. Whether Dum-E is of any more use in the home than the robot was in Stark’s lab remains to be seen.

After all, Dum-E does destroy Peter’s Death Star Lego model (a throwback to Spider-Man: Homecoming as well) after he moves into Happy’s home. It’s lucky Dum-E is so adorable, otherwise it could be hard to forgive.

4. Spidey vs Doc Ock

Sony Pictures

Pay close attention to the bridge sequence when Doc Ock battles Spidey for the first time, and you’ll see a nod to the villain’s first-ever Spider-Man appearance.

The car taking Paula Newsome’s MIT administrator to the airport has the license plate 63A5M-3. That’s a nod to issue 3 of The Amazing Spider-Man, released in 1963, which sees Otto Octavius involved in an experiment that goes wrong, fusing mechanical arms to his body.

He battles Spidey a couple of times in the issue, winning one and losing one, but that obviously wasn’t the end of their battles in the series.

5. “I’m something of a scientist myself”

After Peter traps Doctor Strange in the mirror dimension, he talks to the imprisoned villains about his plan to “cure” them of what turned them into villains.

Norman Osborn offers to help with Peter’s plan as he states that, “I’m something of a scientist myself”. It’s a throwback to his line in the first Spider-Man movie, which has gone on to become a meme since its release.

It’s not the first reference to a popular meme though, but more on that in a bit. It’s also not the only line that’s reused from the OG trilogy as Doc Ock talks about holding the “power of the sun in the palm of my hand”.

6. “With great power…”

It had to happen at some point. The iconic Spider-Man line finally makes its MCU debut, but nobody could have expected the heartbreaking circumstances.

Instead of Uncle Ben, it’s Aunt May who delivers the line in its original form – “with great power, there must also come great responsibility” – as she’s dying from injuries caused by Green Goblin’s glider.

Uncle Ben said it in the original Spider-Man movie in its shortened version (“with great power comes great responsibility”), but it was a line that was cut from The Amazing Spider-Man.

This shortened version gets an encore in No Way Home when the three Spider-Men are bonding over their losses. “She told me with great power,” Holland’s Peter starts, with Maguire’s Peter finishing it, “Comes great responsibility”.

We must also give a special shout-out to Maguire’s Peter calling Garfield’s Peter “amazing” because that warmed our cynical hearts.

7. Spider-Man pointing meme

Disney

It had to happen. As the three Spider-Men get to work on the cures for the villains, Ned calls for Peter and all of them respond.

In the confusion that follows, they all start pointing at each other in a live-action version of the Spider-Man pointing meme. It was spawned from the ‘Double Identity’ episode of original animated Spider-Man series, with Into the Spider-Verse also delivering its own version.

Does it really add anything to No Way Home? Not really. But is it fun? Absolutely.

8. Captain America shield

Marvel StudiosSony Pictures

The Statue of Liberty has had an Avengers makeover in No Way Home as it now holds a Captain America shield.

It’s unclear whether that’s in tribute to the OG Cap for his efforts in bringing back half of the world’s population, or whether it’s a nod to the new Cap as No Way Home is set after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

What we do know is that after the final battle, the Statue of Liberty is going to need another makeover as the shield is broken off and probably isn’t in the best shape after all the pumpkin bombs and electricity. Will they just pop the shield back on? Or maybe they’ll choose an Iron Man suit instead.

The fifth episode of Hawkeye did hint that work was already underway as Yelena Boleva talks of wanting to visit the new Statue of Liberty. Hawkeye is set a few weeks after No Way Home‘s finale, so repairing the statue was clearly a priority.

9. Back problems

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Even superheroes need to warm up before the big fight, so when Maguire’s Spidey complains of back issues, Garfield’s Spidey helps him out by cracking his back.

The scene is a throwback to Spider-Man 2 when, after a jump goes wrong, Peter has a bumpy landing and back pain when he gets up. Two decades on, it’s not a surprise that all this superhero lark wreaks havoc with your back.

10. “Alien made out of black goo”

Also before the final battle, the three Spider-Men are reminiscing about the villains they’ve battled with the two former Peters being a bit jealous that the new one has literally been to space.

Maguire’s Peter talks about fighting an “alien made out of black goo” in a nod to the dodgy take on Venom in Spider-Man 3. Venom has, of course, returned to our screens and pops up in the mid-credits scene, teasing a future Spidey vs Venom battle.

Even a dodgy Venom is better than what Garfield’s Peter has to offer as he just says he fought a Russian “Rhinoceros machine”. He is referring to Paul Giamatti’ s villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 who isn’t one of the villains who appears in No Way Home, despite rumors he could complete the Sinister Six.

We do get a bit of Rhino though as when the multiverse starts cracking open, there’s a distinct Rhino outline seen among the villains set to break into the world.

11. Miles Morales

Sony Pictures

After Electro is cured and becomes plain old Max Dillon again, he tells Garfield’s Peter that he was always surprised that he ended up being a white guy.

“Gotta be a Black Spider-Man somewhere,” he notes and, as we know, there is and his name is Miles Morales. Miles got his long-awaited big screen debut in Into the Spider-Verse, but we’re still waiting for his live-action version.

Could this line be a tease of where the MCU’s take on Spider-Man goes next? Tom Holland has been speaking about potentially a “more diverse” future for the franchise, where he transitions from Spider-Man to Spider-Man’s mentor.

Why can’t that new Spidey be Miles Morales? We’d love to see it.

12. MJ fall

zendaya as mj in spider man no way home

Marvel StudiosSony Pictures

We’ve saved the most emotional Easter egg to last. MJ falls from the Statue of Liberty during the final battle, a nod to one of the comic’s most controversial sequences where Gwen Stacy died of a broken neck after being saved by Spidey from a fall.

Holland’s Peter is stopped from saving MJ by the Green Goblin. but as speculated beforehand, Garfield’s Peter sees MJ falling and saves her to stop her meeting the same fate as Gwen Stacy.

He checks that she’s OK, but really, he’s the one who needs a hug as it clearly reminds him of what he wasn’t able to do for Gwen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

We’re not crying, you’re crying.
