The Danish People’s Party has lined up election defeat and is divided internally before today’s election of a new party leader.
Regardless of who is elected is the time short for uniting the party before a future parliamentary election.
People’s Party (DF) 21.1 percent of the vote and became Denmark’s second largest party. Since then, voters have betrayed the immigration-critical party and after a disastrous municipal election in mid-November last year, Kristian Thulesen Dahl chose to announce his resignation as party leader.
Supported by Kjærsgaard
When his heir is to be elected this afternoon at an extra annual meeting in Herning, Thulesen Dahl himself can not attend. On Monday, he was tested positive for covid-19.
he prefers as the new party leader, but Morten Messerschmidt is a clear favorite, according to Erik Holstein, political commentator at the Danish online newspaper Altinget.
Especially since he has received support from the longtime party leader Pia Kjærsgaard, who co-founded the party in 1995.
– Kjærsgaard’s support obviously means a lot and I can not imagine anything other than Morten Messerschmidt being elected, but the strife that is within the Danish People’s Party right now will continue after the election of a new party leader , says Erik Holstein to TT.
Next election no later than next summer
Although Messerschmidt is officially supported by five members of parliament (out of 16 in total), four parliamentary colleagues have pointed out the main challenger Martin Henriksen as the new party leader RE. A couple of them have also said that they are considering leaving the Danish People’s Party if Messerschmidt is elected.
The third remaining candidate is Merete Dea Larsen, who sits in the party leadership and was a Member of Parliament 2015–2019.
The time is short to unite the party for the next parliamentary election. Denmark does not have fixed election days, but the next parliamentary elections will be held by June 2023 at the latest.
