Gary Neville sent a warning that the European Super League was ‘back on the table’ and action needs to be taken.
Twelve teams – including six from England – announced themselves as founder members of the breakaway league on April 18 last year but within 72 hours the league had fallen apart amid fan outrage and Government opposition.
At the Financial Times Business of Football Summit, LaLiga president Javier Tebas insists the clubs still wedded to the Super League idea are seeking to revive it.
The Spaniard said Juventus chief Andrea Agnelli had hosted his Real Madrid and Barcelona counterparts Florentino Perez and Joan Laporta in the Italian city recently, with a view to relaunching the hugely controversial project – this time without English clubs.
Agnelli refused to be drawn on ‘Super League 2’ when he appeared at the summit but continually stressed the need for “deep-rooted reform” in European football.
“Last year was the first time not one, not two, not three, but 12 clubs, made a statement, which was a profound shout of alarm to the system, that we have to do something to create a sustainable industry,” he said.

The Super League trio are challenging UEFA in the European Court of Justice. They claim UEFA’s decision to block the Super League and to sanction the clubs involved was abuse of a dominant position and a breach of European competition law.
Neville, who was front and centre of the criticism of the ESL and the club involved last year, tweeted his warning that English football needs to be protected.
The Sky Sports pundit tweeted: “The ESL is back on the table – Real, Barca and Juve are pushing.
“It’s critical we accelerate the Fan Led Review recommendations through Parliament with legislation to protect English football.
“That will allow any new proposals to be viewed with independence.”
