Bulgaria is negotiating with a specific country for the purchase of two submarines of a certain type. This was announced by the Minister of Defense Stefan Yanev on the air of Nova News. According to him, the funds can be provided in the budget or in its update in the summer.

Yanev explained that these are not new submarines, but those in “very good technical condition”.

We do not have submarines, and it is good for every fleet to have such an ability “, Yanev commented, adding that at the moment” everything is at the level of negotiations “.

The idea of ​​buying a submarine was also part of the draft plan for the development of the armed forces of the previous government of GERB and the United Patriots. Former Minister of Defense Krassimir Karakachanov has repeatedly confirmed that the possibility of buying a second-hand submarine is being studied, but the investment has not been launched.

Stefan Yanev confirmed that Bulgaria will most likely buy eight more fighters. but it is not yet known when. We remind you that the Minister of Defense Georgi Panayotov sent a letter of request to the US Government for preparation of a draft contract for the purchase of eight more fighters . Yanev announced that a response to the letter is expected by the end of March.

He stated that it could not be said whether the order for new armored combat vehicles would be carried out this year, because the procedure had been suspended and no contract had been concluded.

We continue talks on the budget and seek additional funds for the modernization of the ground forces – they are the backbone of the Bulgarian army, “said the Minister of Defense.

In recent years, Bulgaria has made significant investments in defense, including eight F-16 fighters for BGN 2.1 billion and construction of infrastructure for them for about BGN 300 million. Two patrol ships were purchased for BGN 1 billion, but without the ammunition for them, which are worth between half and one billion levs . The Cabinet of Ministers has also started preparations for an order for 3D radars related to F-16 aircraft for BGN 390 million

Regarding a potential conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Minister of Defense said that three possible scenarios. He added that a meeting of defense ministers is coming up in the NATO calendar in February, and until then we must have a national position.
