“The key is in these three things”: The end of the pandemic is in sight, and here's how it can be accelerated

The end of the coronavirus pandemic may be in sight. But what can we do to make sure the virus is behind us?

We have to to accept that the virus from our lives will not disappear in the same second, but we will have to live with it for some time, and we must be aware of two facts, writes The Washington Post , transmitted Jutarnji list .

According to Anthony Fauci, a leading American expert on infectious diseases and an adviser to President Biden, the virus is unlikely to suddenly become less deadly. In fact, new mutations could result in more contagious and virulent variants, and their resistance to vaccines would only aggravate the situation.

Second, we still need to try to reach as many vaccinated people as possible in order to gain joint immunity.

But in a comment Washington Post three more things are listed that could contribute to a faster end to the pandemic. It is about vaccinating children, new drugs against coronavirus for oral use and extensive and free rapid testing of the population.

Vaccines for children

Vaccinating children could help control the further spread of the virus. First, in the United States, according to some estimates, one in four children is infected, and several hundred have unfortunately died.

The Food and Drug Administration in the United States has scheduled a meeting of its advisory board to review the Pfizer vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 for Oct. 26, and Pfizer also said that data on the effectiveness of the vaccine for children from 6 months to 4 years could be ready at the end of 2021, which would mean that it can start wider use at the beginning of next year.

Medicines for oral use

Pharmaceutical companies Merck has published outstanding results for an antiviral pill called Molnupiravir which he says can reduce hospitalization or death by about 50 percent.

Molnupiravir is taken orally twice a day for five days , which is far more appropriate of the existing treatments for kovid-19, which require a specialized center for the treatment of intravenous infusions or a series of injections.

Tablets would certainly not be a cure for kovid-19, and the vaccine would still be far more effective. But if taking pills means a 50% lower chance that infected patients will need hospital treatment, it can help relieve pressure on the health care system and save many lives.

Free quick tests

Antiviral treatments only work to prevent severe illness if taken early in the course of the illness. This means that infections must be detected as soon as possible. Moreover, about half of coronavirus transmission comes from asymptomatic individuals. Restraining kovida-19 requires the identification of these individuals before further transmission occurs, which also depends on testing.

The introduction of free testing would help in faster detection of the virus transmission itself.

When conducted in conjunction with vaccination, regular testing can replace the need to wear masks and distance yourself in schools, offices, and social settings. Also, free tests can be given to families on a weekly basis so that members can be tested before school or work, but also before going to any family gathering.
