Former President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and his family have left Kazakhstan. This was reported by the local portal Orda.kz .
According to journalists, almost the entire family of the former president has left Kazakhstan, only Nazarbayev’s older brother Bolat remains in the country. There is currently no official confirmation of this information.
It was also reported that Nazarbayev’s nephew Samat Abish, who held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Security Committee of Kazakhstan but was released with the start of protests, was also reported . This information was later refuted.
78-year-old Nursultan Nazarbayev was invariably President of Kazakhstan after the collapse of the USSR in 1991, although he became the nominal leader of the republic in 1989 after being appointed first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan.
In 2019, Nazarbayev announced his resignation. Kasim-Zhomart Tokayev, the Speaker of the Kazakh Parliament, has been appointed acting President of the country until the new elections. A few months later, Tokayev won the election, gaining the support of 70.96% of voters.
Despite losing his presidency, Nazarbayev retained other levers of power. However, before leaving the country, Nazarbayev lost an important official role in power – he was removed from the post of chairman of the Security Council.
It will be recalled that protests took place in Kazakhstan after that , as the government introduced a new price for liquefied gas on January 1, 2022. On January 4, President of Kazakhstan Kasim-Zhomart Tokayev announced a reduction in gas prices. In addition, people demanded the resignation of the government – this demand was met on the morning of January 5.

On the first day Russia, Belarus and Armenia agreed. An “anti-terrorist operation” has been announced in the city of Almaty and the Kyzylorda region. According to media reports, at least 168 people were injured in the riots in the Kyzylorda region.
