The new BMW-designed steering wheel makes the Tesla Model S look mundane

BMW is one of the largest car manufacturers that has accustomed us in recent years to high-performance and technological cars. A sample of what Bavarian technology means is the new steering wheel for which the Bavarians have filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

We live in a world where self-government is gaining ground. The passenger compartment thus becomes a kind of lounge and the more spacious it is, the better.

The unusual design proposed by BMW is reminiscent of the steering wheel on Tesla Model S . But it looks so much better. The German-designed steering wheel looks like an airplane handle. It consists of a pair of angled fasteners or smaller grips, positioned to the left and right of the center of the steering wheel.

The principle of rotation is the same as for a conventional steering wheel. This involves raising your left hand to turn right and vice versa to turn left.

Smaller handles rotate to stay upright at all times. The main horizontal “spoke” rotates around its own axis, which is somewhat similar to the action of a normal steering wheel. But if the mode of operation has not changed, then what benefits does the new BMW steering wheel bring in everyday driving?

According to the notes in The patent file filed by BMW can save more space by installing such a steering wheel instead of a conventional one.

This type of steering wheel would take some time to adjust, but it could certainly be a solution to the problem of space in the passenger compartment.

This is not the first BMW driver’s license

It is not yet known whether BMW will introduce this steering wheel in series production. But if we look at some photos, it is very possible that we will find the future models that the Germans will launch in 2022 or 2023.

According to published information by CarBuzz, this is not the first time BMW has filed such a patent. Previously, a patent for a similar steering wheel was filed in China, but also in Germany. It was also filed with the Global Trademark Office. It had a design much closer to the classic one.

Similar steering wheel concepts were used many years ago. The closest in appearance was the 1965 Ford Wrist Twist. However, it never went into series production.
