The problem of basic-level housing is difficult to solve. The Hong Kong Association of Community Organizations conducted a survey from August to September this year and found that the rental income of subdivided housing is higher than the profit of the entire unit, and it can even earn 540,000 more per year.
The association also pointed out that the lack of public housing production has increased the demand for subdivided housing, and landlords have conditions to continuously increase rents, making the rent per square foot of subdivided housing significantly higher than that of private residential units. The association’s earlier survey also found that the respondents’ rent accounted for nearly 40% of their income in the past two months, reflecting the current difficulties of sub-divided households.
The Hong Kong Association of Community Organizations suggests that the government should formulate initial rents as soon as possible, grant cash allowances to unsuitable housing tenants who have been waiting for public housing for more than three years, and build additional public housing.
