Ricardo Monreal Ávila has only broken the rules of the game once. He did it a quarter of a century ago, when Andrés Manuel López Obrador convinced him to challenge PRI discipline and join progressivism. There were two years left for the PAN to win the Presidency, more because of the deficiencies of the PRD than because of the strength of Foxism.

Then the goal was to get the PRI out of Los Pinos. Now, the leader of the morenista majority in the Senate of the Republic acknowledges facing the most difficult stage of his political career. And just one year before the race for the presidential candidacy formally begins within the ruling party, with no room for manoeuvre, he makes a desperate call to avoid a rupture.

The confrontation —he says— is inevitable. Will his warnings be heeded? In the first section of the six-year term, Monreal Ávila built his fortress in the legislative precinct.
