Abdulrazak Gurnah is awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature
This is announced by the Swedish Academy’s permanent secretary Mats Malm.
Abdulrazak Gurnah receives the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy’s motivation reads:
“The Nobel Prize in Literature in 2021 is awarded to the novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah, born in Zanzibar and active in England, for uncompromising and with great compassion shed light on the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gap between cultures and continents. ”
Abdulrazak Gurnah, born in 1948 on the island of Zanzibar, Tanzania, came to England as a refugee in late 1960s.
Gurnah made his novel debut in 1987 with Memory of Departure, which was followed by Pilgrim’s Way (1988) and Dottie (1990). His most internationally famous work is the novel Paradise
Until his retirement, he has been active as a professor of literature at the University of Kent in Canterbury.

) Otippad pristagare The election was announced in the usual order in the Stock Exchange by the Academy’s Permanent Secretary Mats Malm . Abdulrazak Gurnah thus becomes the 118th order to be awarded the prize.
Among the pre-favorites were Jamaica Kincaid, Anne Carson and Lyudmila Ulitskaya. Norwegians Jon Fosse and Karl-Ove Knausgård were also well on the odds lists. But the choice fell on Abdulrazak Gurnah.
Aftonbladet’s experts are as surprised as the rest of the world after the news.
– Surprising! exclaims Åsa Linderborg, senior reporter and former cultural director at Aftonbladet.
– That’s a great motivation. You get very eager to take part in his writing, says Karin Pettersson, cultural director at Aftonbladet.
The publisher: “Completely dizzying”
The book publisher Celander publishes Abdulrazak Gurnah’s books in Swedish. It is a small book publisher specializing in anti-colonial, non-fiction history. When Aftonbladet reaches the publisher Henrik Celander, he is almost in shock.
– I was very surprised, completely dizzy … I do not really know what to say.
What does this mean for the publisher?
– Of course it means a lot of attention but what does it mean in terms of finances and such I actually have none clue.
How will you celebrate?
– I do not know. I have not had time to talk to my wife yet, says Henrik Celander.
