Riley Ahenakew, 30, and Stephanie Starblanket, 34, both of Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, and Roderick Dreaver, 26, of Big River First Nation, are each charged with criminal negligence causing death and two counts of forcible confinement in connection with Netmaker’s death, RCMP said in a media release on Friday.
Netmaker was reported to have been abducted from his home and assaulted on Jan. 6, 2020. RCMP determined he was last seen in an isolated area northwest of Big River First Nation. His remains were found near Pekakumew Lake on Jan. 10, 2020.
RCMP previously charged Karlyne Morin, 20, of Big River First Nation with one count of criminal negligence causing death and two counts of forcible confinement. The charges announced on Friday bring the total number of accused people connected to this case to four.
Netmaker was the subject of a public alert issued by Saskatoon city police in 2012. He was considered a high-risk violent sexual offender and was released on conditions to live in Saskatoon. He was described as having a “history of violent sexual offences against women he comes into contact with.”
At the time, police cautioned the public not to attempt any form of vigilantism or unreasonable conduct toward Netmaker.
Documents obtained from the Parole Board of Canada show he had served time for sexual assault and mischief.
CTV Saskatoon reported several days after the public alert that Netmaker was returned to custody for a breach of curfew.
