Leading short video sharing platform TikTok announced on Monday that its monthly active users worldwide have exceeded 1 billion, indicating that the app is still growing steadily.
At present, TikTok is very popular in the United States and other markets, especially among teenagers. During the Covid-19 pandemic, a large number of American consumers downloaded it.
TikTok previously said that as of January 2018, it had about 55 million users worldwide. By December 2018, the number had grown to more than 271 million, and by December 2019 it had increased to 507 million. Last summer, TikTok announced that its monthly active users reached nearly 700 million.
TikTok is a short video sharing platform owned by Chinese technology giant ByteDance. The app is also known as international edition of Douyin, a similar platform released by the company for the Chinese mainland market. TikTok was launched in May 2017 and has grown steadily. Now, its monthly active users have exceeded 1 billion.
The app analytics platform Sensor Tower in July this year reported that TikTok became the first mobile application unrelated to Facebook with a global download volume of 3 billion.

In contrast, Facebook said that in the second quarter of this year, the total monthly active users of Facebook-related applications (including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp) were 3.51 billion, up from 3.45 billion in the first quarter.
While TikTok is growing rapidly, many large technology competitors are scrambling to launch similar products. Facebook launched Instagram Reels last August while Snapchat announced a similar feature Spotlight last year. Google’s subsidiary YouTube also launched Shorts last September.
