TikTok is making some changes to who can go live on the platform starting in November. The minimum age is now 18.

The company says it is making this change as part of an effort to protect users and creators on the platform. “Currently, people must be aged 16 or over to host a LIVE. From November 23, the minimum age will increase from 16 to 18.”

“As we consider the breadth of our global audience, we already take a graduated approach to the features that our community can access based on their age; younger teens need to be aged 16 or older to access Direct Messaging and 18 or older to send virtual gifts or access monetization features,” the blog post reads.

TikTok says it will also be taking steps to make sure that creators who only want to reach an adult audience can do so.

They cite a comedy routine with 18+ jokes or a host who might feel more comfortable knowing the audience is comprised of adults only. TikTok’s live streaming platform is hoping to eat Twitch and YouTube’s lunch with new features, but it’s unclear how it will police this new age policy beyond the typical age gating.

TikTok says adult-only streams will start testing next year. The company also says it is developing a system to identify and restrict certain types of content from being accessed by teens by using filters to ask content creators to specify when their content is more appropriate for an adult audience. This is similar to the system Twitch uses to categorize games.

TikTok says it won’t have ratings or labels on TikTok videos. Instead, creators will have to categorize their content and tags appropriately. The feature looks at content a creator removes from their live and spots similar words, and suggests new filters the host may want to add to their list. “When we tested this feature, we found that it nearly doubled those using keyword filtering when looking at the most popular LIVE creators,” the blog post reads.
