Typhoon “Lion Mountain” hits Hainan Island with strong wind and rain

China News Service Haikou, October 9th ( (Reporter Yin Haiming) This year’s No. 17 typhoon “Lion Mountain” (tropical storm level) landed on Hainan Island on the evening of the 8th and moved slowly within the territory of Hainan Island on the 9th. The Hainan Provincial Meteorological Department predicts that the “Lion Mountain” will move into the Beibu Gulf from the afternoon to the evening of the 9th.

Hainan Meteorological Bureau continued to issue a three-level typhoon warning at 6:50 on the 9th, and a three-level rainstorm warning at 7:00 on the 9th.

Affected by the “Lion Mountain”, from 8 am on the 8th to 6 am on the 9th, heavy rain to heavy rain occurred in the northern half of Hainan Island, and the local area was extremely severe. Heavy rain, moderate to heavy rain and local heavy rain occurred in other areas. The rainfall in 130 townships (districts) of 13 cities and counties in Hainan Island exceeded 100 mm, 32 towns (districts) in 8 cities and counties had rainfall exceeding 200 mm, and the rainfall in 7 towns (districts) of 5 cities and counties exceeded 300 mm. The largest is 357 mm in Baisha Qingsong Township.

The strong wind and rain brought by the typhoon have caused many trees to fall and the roads to accumulate water in Hainan Island for several days. The big trees in Haikou were blown down by strong winds, and water in many streets affected traffic; continuous heavy precipitation caused multiple dangers in Lingao. Lingao Fire Rescue Brigade rescued and evacuated 24 trapped people on the morning of the 9th; Chengmai County University The accumulated water at the bottom of the Dafeng Interchange Bridge in Fengzhen was as deep as 1.8 meters. The tropical cyclone continued to bring wind and rain to Hainan from the night of the 4th. The Hainan Meteorological Observatory predicts that there will still be strong wind and rain on the sea and land of Hainan Province during the day from the 9th to the 10th.

Strong wind and rain have severely affected the traffic in and out of Hainan Island. Haikou Meilan International Airport, which cancelled more than 100 flights on the 8th, cancelled 12 flights as of 10 o’clock on the 9th. Due to wind and rain, the Haikou Xinhai Port, Xiuying Port, and Railway South Port, which ceased operations from the night of the 6th, have not resumed navigation as of press time.

The Hainan Provincial Meteorological Department reminded that although the typhoon “Lion Mountain” has landed, its center will move slowly within the territory of Hainan Island and will still bring Hainan Come strong wind and rain.
