Marina Rodriguez is the fighter to watch this weekend at UFC 272.
UFC 272 is headlined by one of the biggest grudge matches ever in the UFC as Colby Covington will face Jorge Masvidal at the packed T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. This will be the first massive non-title PPV fight that is not headlined by Conor McGregor or Nate Diaz since 2015.
The card is stacked with some great prospects and fighters. From the early prelims to the main card, there are several fighters to have an eye out for but the one to watch resides in the prelims.
But it’s not the min event you are here for.
Marina Rodriguez is the fighter to watch at UFC 272 as she takes on a tough Xiaonan Yan in a massive fight for the strawweight division.
Marina Rodriguez could fight for the strawweight title next
Rodriguez is 15-1-2 in her professional career and has put the strawweight division on notice quickly. She has seven career wins by stoppage, six of them coming by KO/TKO.
After suffering the first loss of her career in 2020 against Carla Esparza via split decision, Rodriguez made some adjustments and had an undefeated year in 2021. She had victories over Amanda Ribas, Michelle Waterson, and Mackenzie Dern. In those three dominant wins Rodriguez had, she jumped on top of the division and currently ranks as the number three contender in the division.
Rodriguez has excellent Muay Thai and striking ability. She is one of the few in the strawweight division that possesses that knockout power. Her style is really well-rounded and has caused problems for her opponents.
The offensive power is something to take seriously but Rodriguez has never been dominated either. She only has one loss, which was via split decision, and two draws. We haven’t seen a definitive loss from Rodriguez, which speaks to how great she truly is.
Rodriguez is taking on a tough striker in Yan Saturday night. She has proven herself to strike with the very best like Waterson when Rodriguez dominated for five rounds in that fight. With a win this weekend at UFC 272, Rodriguez may be next in line for a title shot against the undisputed strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas.
