VCA Amstetten Lower Austria only had to withdraw from the first leg of the CEV Challenge Cup round of 16 at Lausanne UC on Wednesday evening after a thrilling fight and five sets (21:25, 25:23, 21:25, 25:21, 10:15) defeated , can therefore justifiably calculate chances of progressing.
Top scorers in the well-filled Lausanne University Sports Hall were Ramirez (32), Montavon (15) and Prevel (12) or Veselinovic (23), Czyzowski (14) and Vracaric (10). The return match takes place on January 19th in the Johann-Pölz-Halle. In the event of a 3-0 or 3-1 win, the Mostviertler would be in the quarter-finals, and if they won the tie-break, a golden set would have to bring the decision.
“It’s amazing what kind of performances we’re delivering internationally this season. A compliment to my team, which once again presented itself well against a strong opponent,” said VCA sports director Michael Henschke, despite the narrow defeat, and added: “With the Cuban main attacker Ramirez, who played in the first Italian league a year ago has, Lausanne is really strong. But we held up and we’re in a good position for the second leg. I’m looking forward to it, because with the home fans behind us, we could create the next sensation and to be in the top eight teams in the Challenge Cup would be just outstanding.”
In addition to Amstetten, Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel is also represented in the Challenge Cup. The Norsemen will play both round of 16 duels with the Turkish top team Halkbank Ankara next week away, but will be in the MEVZA League on Thursday and Friday, and will make two guest appearances in Croatia at HAOK Mladost Zagreb.
In the AVL Women’s regular round, an addendum game of the sixth round was on the program on Wednesday evening. Erzbergmadln VBV Trofaiach/WSV Eisenerz (8th) did not miss a beat against TSV Sparkasse Hartberg (9th) and won 3-0 (25:22, 25:21, 26:24). It was the fifth win in 15 games for the hosts, who now hold 13 points – six more than Hartberg. The 16th round will take place on Saturday.
A Styrian derby also took place in the AVL Men intermediate round on Wednesday. And this also ended with a home win in three sets: VBC TLC Weiz (2nd) beat TSV Raiffeisen Hartberg (4th) 25:15, 25:21, 27:25 and thus celebrated the second win of the new year. The gap to leaders TJ Sokol V/Post SV Wien is only two points. Hartberg, on the other hand, was not able to write in the intermediate round. The AVL Men continues on Saturday, the hit is the top round duel between VCA Amstetten NÖ and champion UVC Holding Graz.

After two strong performances against Kharkiv and CSKA Sofia, VCA Amstetten NÖ reached the round of 16 for the first time in the club’s history in the CEV Challenge Cup. Lausanne UC was waiting there in the first leg on Wednesday evening and the Lower Austrians had to play the first game away from home. In the well-filled university sports hall, the Mostviertler and the Swiss fought a gripping fight that went over five sets. In the end, the hosts narrowly won 3-2.
“It’s amazing what kind of performances we’re delivering internationally at the moment. A compliment to my team, which once again presented itself well against a strong opponent”, said VCA sports director Michael Henschke happily despite the narrow defeat at the start of the round of 16 duel. “They are really strong with their main attacker from Cuba, who played in the first Italian league last year. But we fought back and you can see what a good game we played,” added Henschke, addressing Ramirez, who was the top scorer on the Swiss side with 32 points.
The hosts started the game better and were able to build up a small lead at the beginning, which the VCA was able to compensate for again. But in the end, the Lausanne team prevailed 25-21. The second round was closely fought. In the final phase, libero Lauris Ochaya, who played the European Cup match for the VCA as an outside attacker, worked out three set balls with a great service series, of which the Mostviertler used the second to 23-25.
In the third round it remained a closely fought match. The Lower Austrians withstood the many attacks from the Swiss, but lost 25-21, as in the opening round. But the European Cup fighters from Amstetten didn’t give up, pressed for another set equalization and after the 21-25 it went into a decisive fifth set. In this they lost 15-10.
“We still have a good starting position for the second leg. I’m already looking forward to Wednesday, because with the home fans behind us, we could create the next sensation and to be among the top eight teams in Europe would just be outstanding,” said the VCA sports director, looking ahead to the second leg on January 19 at 8:15 p.m. in the Johann-Pölz-Halle and the two teams once again compete for the place in the quarter-finals.
