According to KBA, penetrating water can damage the door locking mechanism at temperatures below freezing, so the door appears to be locked and there is a risk that could open unexpectedly while driving.
KBA based in Flensburg, is now monitoring the call of these vehicles in Germany, where the problem affects an estimated 67,400 cars. However, no property damage or injuries have been reported so far.
In the services, they will replace the so-called bowden cables, which also control the function of closing the door and their casing is probably not properly sealed.
A VW spokesman said the first calls had already started and would be broken down by market. More specifically, they started in colder weather countries, such as Russia and the Scandinavian countries, and will then continue in Central to Southern Europe, a spokesman said, adding that the problem could be resolved quickly.
