Watch Pro Strongmen and Bodybuilders Take a Grip Strength Challenge

Grip strength is an important marker for overall strength and a major component in strength sports like strongman and powerlifting, so it’s no surprise that when YouTuber and bodybuilder Jujimufu (a.k.a. Jon Call) and former World’s Strongest Man Martins Licis got together for some good-natured competitive fun, their showdown was based on grip challenges. (The two often train together, including for the 2021 Rogue Invitational and a jiu jitsu lesson.)

To test their grip strength, they use Jujimufu’s own Grip Genie tool to lift 100 pounds in plates, and see who can hold the weights the longest. The battle also includes a group of bodybuilders, including Joey Szatmary and Antoine Vaillant.

The guys chalk up their hands, and the contest begins. First up is Joey, who clocks in 44 seconds. Then Antoine steps up, and beats Joey with a time of 47 seconds. Jujimufu is next, and he only gets 42 seconds. Finally, Martins is up… and he crushes the field. (He even starts doing shrugs holding the weights to show off.) His final time is 60 seconds.

For the next grip strength challenge, they decide to do a dead hang from extra thick handles. “We’re not going to last very long here,” says Jujimufu as he sets up the grips.

And he’s not wrong. Joey clocks in at 7 seconds, and Antoine gets 5 seconds. Before his turn, Jujimufu is nervous. “Based on these guys I’m pretty scared,” he says. But he proves himself, clocking in 18 seconds.

“Martins, I don’t think you got me!” says Jujimufu after his hold. Martins steps up, and falls shorts with a time of 17 seconds.

The entire group shows off the pump in their forearms, calling it the ‘Forearm Pageant’ portion of the contest. They all do different poses, before the final contest: wrist curls using a 60-pound dumbbell.

Joey gets 13 reps, and Juji goes next and reps 20 curls. Antoine gets an impressive 19 reps, and Martins crushes the field with 25 reps. The overall winner: Martins. No surprise, since he has held the title of World’s Strongest Man.
