Samsung is in the process of expanding the latest version of its software layer, based on Android 12. And we have already been able to test it: after installing One UI 4 on our Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra we tell you what are the biggest changes introduced by the update.
Android 12 may not be exactly new anymore that this version of the operating system has officially been with us since October (along with the Google Pixel 6 ), but, as is often the case in our operating system for phones, it is the beginning of the following year that marks the largest projection of updates. And Samsung is not used to missing this springboard: its catalog is in full swing. First for the most expensive and recent, it is also a custom.
How to officially update Samsung Galaxy to Android 12 and One UI 4
First things first: explain how to renew the phone software, just as we have done with our personal mobile. After releasing the update in South Korea, and expanding to the countries where Samsung tested beta, One UI 4 now reaches various Samsung Galaxy, such as the Spanish Note 20.
The update process is the usual one: all you need is a good Internet connection (preferably WiFi, the update weighs around 2.5 GB) and follow the steps below.
- It is likely that your mobile will show a notice in the notification area letting you know that the update has arrived . In that case, click there and follow the instructions.
- If you do not have a notification, go to the settings of your Samsung Galaxy and enter “Software update“.
- Go to “Download and install“: your phone should notify you that it has a pending update. Otherwise you must wait.
- Tap on “Update Now” and wait for the process to complete. It takes about ten minutes.
- You can also update by connecting your Samsung to your computer. To do this you need to install Samsung Smart Switch (Android and macOS). Once installed, connect the mobile to the computer via USB and open Smart Switch. It will automatically check for updates and prompt you to install them.
The update process takes a few minutes: the new software involves updating the layer, Android itself and also the applications installed on the phone. After the process the Samsung Galaxy will be about to candy. That yes, the aesthetic changes are not noticeable : One UI 4 inherits the design of One UI 3 without variations being appreciated at first glance. Yes it is included Material You.
What are the main changes in One UI 4 with Android 12? Let’s review them.
Theming material: automatic color adjustment according to the wallpaper
The aesthetics do not vary perceptibly, but it can be seen in most elements, both in the menus and in the cards and animations. Samsung has rounded the corners even more, offers a more refined color palette and there is a better match between the system and Samsung’s own apps .
One of the most striking changes is the implementation of Material You, along with Material Theming, in One UI 4. As in our Google Pixel 6, the Samsung Galaxy now adapt the tones of the menus and compatible apps to the colors of the wallpaper . This is especially appreciated in quick settings and device settings.
More privacy
Google places special emphasis on privacy with Android 12, this is one of the points that manufacturers especially transfer to their updates. Samsung is no stranger to this with One UI 4.
The changes introduced in terms of privacy are the following:
- Permission usage list with history by apps.
- Access permissions to the camera and microphones that can be turned off.
- Clipboard access notice (must be activated, it is deactivated by default).
- Approximate location. One UI 4 allows you to restrict the location to approximate to make apps believe that they obtain the precise location.
Widgets section redesign
Samsung adopts the native Android 12 widget picker to improve the visibility of all floating elements on the desktop without having to manually add them. In addition, has polished its own widgets to adapt them to Material You: more rounded corners and a more minimalist design.
More features for lock screen
Samsung allows you to add widgets to the lock screen, but not desktop widgets: it is possible to pin different system functions. The multimedia content player, the weather, the voice recorder or digital health. All these widgets can be activated and deactivated from the system settings.
Another important novelty is that Samsung allows you to change the audio source directly on the lock screen. Inside the player appears the “Media Output” button. By pressing there you can choose whether the sound comes out through the phone’s speaker, the Bluetooth headphones or the connected TV, for example.
Camera app redesign and video improvements
All Samsung apps receive a facelift with One UI 4. This also applies to the camera app: it simplifies its interface to hide advanced modes and playful; while optimizing scene detection so that it jumps only when necessary.
Among the most noticeable changes are:
Smarter gallery and better media editor
Continuing the thread of major app changes in One UI 4, Samsung’s Media Gallery takes a leap forward with Android 12: Samsung improves features smart gallery including more options for Stories and also for Albums (new map view, automatically created videos…).
The new Gallery image remaster applies automatic enhancements ranging from increased resolution to enhanced of brightness and sharpness. It can be selected from the context menu that appears on each photo.
The video and photo editor included in the Gallery allows reversing the changes made to the content even after saving the edited files. In addition, Samsung includes video collages, lighting control, Automatic Stories after content selection and image fusion.
Status mobile at a glance
With One UI Samsung has introduced an Emoji to indicate the status of the phone from the maintenance screen. Said Emoji reflects the operation of the Samsung Galaxy in terms of autonomy, security and available space ; with the relevant data on that same screen.
To access each section, just click on its section: One UI 4 shows possible battery and security risks in the foreground ; as well as other important sections, such as the latest software update and the direct access to the diagnosis of the smartphone components (included in Samsung Members).
More accessibility tools
Android 12 tries to improve the use of the smartphone in those people who have more difficulties in such use. And Samsung expands on this accessibility by including new options, such as improved brightness reduction (“Extra Dim”)). That the screen bothers even at minimum brightness? Well, One Ui 4 allows you to reduce it even more from the accessibility tools.
Samsung includes a floating ball that can be activated to more easily access the configured accessibility tools. It also improves the visibility of the screen, magnification through the magnifying glass, the panel can execute a “flash” when the mobile receives notifications and mouse gestures are improved.
