WeRide self-driving vehicles surpass 6 million miles on public roads

Chinese self-driving startup WeRide said Monday its vehicles had covered more than 10 million kilometers (6.2 million miles) on public roads, mostly in the Chinese city of Guangzhou and in San Jose in the US. The metric puts WeRide not far behind bigger rivals such as Baidu, whose cars have driven more than 10 million miles according to the company’s third quarter results published in November. Waymo took 10 years to hit a 20 million mile mark, according to statements from Google’s self-driving unit in January, 2020. The Guangzhou-headquartered WeRide stated that 2.5 million kilometers had been completed in “fully driverless mode.”
