West Ham’s bid to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez on deadline day has fallen through, 90min can confirm.
The 22-year-old emerged on Sunday as a late target for the Hammers, who were trying to add some much needed firepower to David Moyes’ squad.
But having been talks with Benfica for most of the day, 90min can reveal that West Ham will not be signing the Uruguayan before the 11pm deadline – with the Portuguese giants feeling there is not enough time left to agree a satisfactory deal.
Nunez has been in terrific form this season for Benfica, scoring 15 goals in 16 Premiera Liga games as well as netting three goals in six Champions League outings.
His form has captured the attention of a number of clubs around Europe, with Arsenal known to be one of his admirers, and West Ham had looked to get a deal of around €60m done after failing with bids for Leeds duo Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips earlier in the week.
The Hammers have been keen to sign a centre-back as well as a new forward, holding extensive talks with Marseille over their Croatian defender Duje Caleta-Car.
The Ligue 1 side were willing to sanction a permanent transfer, owing to financial struggles, but West Ham’s preference was to agree a loan deal with an option to buy. That wasn’t something Marseille were willing to agree to.
West Ham also held a late interest in Marseille’s 21-year-old striker, Bamba Dieng, but again talks over a loan deal have not led to a positive outcome.
