Traian Berbeceanu, also nicknamed “Commissioner Corrado Cattani” of Romania, has not been an active police officer for many years. For a short time he was prefect of the Capital, then from this spring he became city-manager of Deva. But the former head of the White Crime Brigade, noted for his investigations into thugs in the west of the country, has never forgotten that he is a police officer.
Not even his detention and investigation of DIICOT, which then claimed to have supported a criminal group, which was denied by the judges, could not determine Traian Berbeceanu to renounce his passion for the profession he practiced with passion for a quarter of age. Impact.ro presents you an exclusive interview with Traian Berbeceanu.
He still carries a weapon
Impact.ro. Mr. Traian Berbeceanu, do you miss your job as a policeman these days?
Traian Berbeceanu: If I miss you? Sure you do. Although in a way I’m still a cop. Sure, a cop in reserve, but still a cop. And, without false modesty, I would not change with those active cops who forget to be active!
Otherwise, yes, I miss and will miss still, but I can’t change anything. I remain with my memories and with my friends, which I have nothing to give up, but also with the pride that I once led the most beautiful team, the Organized Crime Brigade in Alba Iulia.
Impact.ro: After 25 years in which you were a policeman, did you manage to get rid of your skills? Let’s say you’re still used to looking back today, whether you’re being watched or not?
Traian Berbeceanu: (laugh). I never turned my head, not even when I was an active police officer. I didn’t have to do it and even today I don’t have to make sure from this point of view. When you know you’ve only done your job, you don’t have to look back.
As for other skills, I don’t think I have that. I always tried to do my job correctly, and nothing more. Ah, I still carry a weapon…
Impact.ro: What do you mean? Do you still have the right to carry a service weapon?
Traian Berbeceanu: No, this is not a service weapon . I also have a gun license. I have an American Smith & Wesson revolver on me. My wife gave it to me many years ago. She dreamed of it and then decided to buy me one. That’s how I got into his possession.
When he was most afraid
Impact.ro: When he was most afraid when you were
Traian Berbeceanu: In this job you face all kinds of moments, moods and feelings. So with fear. But my greatest fear was during my detention and investigation for something that turned out not to have been committed. Although I knew that the accusation against me was not true, I was afraid.
And do you know why? Because until then I had faced all kinds of dangers from people arguing with the law. It was normal, in a way, to expect from them, all kinds of traps, dangers, reactions. But that time, when that whole story was staged for me, I felt like I had never considered such a thing. This time I was attacked, so to speak, by representatives of the state authorities.
I mean from my family, from my camp! And I was frightened, because I wouldn’t have expected such a thing in my head. Now I know you have to pay attention to such a variant, but at that time I didn’t know. It’s a bitter and so painful finding!
Impact. Ro: Have you ever met people you investigated or even arrested? How do you react?
Traian Berbeceanu : Of course yes… but no one crosses the other sidewalk. Rather, when we recognize each other, we prefer to keep this to ourselves.
Every time I have such a meeting, I have various memories. But also the belief that I have nothing to complain about. I tried to always be elegant and free of abuse in such moments of the police profession. In short, at that time I did my duty as a policeman, he or she, as a thief…
My son’s reaction (.
Impact.ro: Who do you teach your passion for as a police officer as a family relay?
Traian Berbeceanu : Aaaa, it is clear that you did not read my autobiographical book! My son, when he was little, told everyone that he would be the head of Organized Crime. He believed that his father’s job was inherited and he was preparing for it as he knew best. At his age! After what happened to his father, he never wanted to hear of such a possibility again!
Impact .ro: Did you find out about that story from Oradea, with policemen in custody arresting themselves?
Traian Berbeceanu : Yes, I read in the press . I do not comment and I will not comment on such a thing. Not even among loved ones, because especially among loved ones a policeman must know what he says and what he always keeps only for himself!
