The controversial bill by a group of coalition deputies led by Anna Záborská went to second reading. On the one hand, it is referred to as the law on assistance to women, but in practice it simply means making access to abortions more difficult. However, is it really necessary to complain about something that is not easy to get to in Slovakia even today? Not to mention that undergoing abortion is not an easy step for a woman.
Although not all members of the coalition agreed to support the law, it has nevertheless succeeded and will be discussed at second reading. It wants to introduce an extension of the waiting period before abortion from 48 to 96 hours or a ban on advertising for abortions. Conservative politician Anna Záborská has been repeatedly making similar proposals for several years, which have in common that they try to make access to abortions more difficult. Another point of the current is the renaming of abortion to termination of pregnancy.
Abortions are not easily accessible to everyone even now
However, these word games forget the woman’s feelings and the possible psychological impact that can mark her forever. The organization Option , which is actively involved in accessing safe abortions, stated in its report that, thanks to purposefully repeated proposals to reduce abortions, the company has the impression that undergoing abortion in Slovakia is currently simple and easily accessible to everyone.
Results research , which mapped the availability of abortion for women, showed that out of 70 mapped facilities, up to 34% refuse to provide legal abortion and in the other 23% it is not possible to determine the level of its availability . Isn’t this a problem that should be actively addressed?
When abortions are said to be reckless, it is forgotten to mention for many women the decisive fact is that the estimated price of such a procedure in Slovakia is currently even with additional fees at 414 eur. Not everyone can afford to free up so much money from their budget, and this eliminates the possibility for women to make their own decisions on this issue.
There are abortions in Europe pills common, we are thinking about how to complicate abortions
Countries that are trying to move forward are discussing the introduction of abortion pills as a possibility in which women avoid surgery. No, even in this case, it does not work so that a woman can take them headlessly, but they are given under medical supervision that monitors her health.
In most countries In Europe, abortion pills are a reality. In Slovakia, however, we still have to wait for a hard-to-reach and costly surgery, which we don’t even know where they are performing properly. After the new one, a longer waiting period for the procedure, increased to 96 hours, could be added to this already traumatic period in a woman’s life.
We should not go away by way of Poland or the State of Texas, which approved the strictest abortion law only a few days ago, according to which abortions should not be performed from the sixth week of pregnancy. Needless to say, some women do not even know they are pregnant at this time.
Why is it a legal possibility to transfer abortion by a right that should not be denied to any woman or complicated in any way?
To illustrate the opposite of this situation, we can use an excellent film called 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days by Romanian director Christian Mungiu , who gives a strong statement about the consequences of what it looks like when a woman has no choice but to resort to an illegal abortion. Above all, however, it shows a picture of a time when girls and women had no choice.
University students on an unpleasant path to illegal abortion
It is set in the era of Romanian totalitarianism, just before the fall of the Iron Curtain and was created according to an event that actually took place. His greatest strength lies in the fact that he does not embellish anything. It shows a harsh reality that no one would want to experience. And it didn’t, but it still wasn’t, and in many parts of the world it still isn’t.
Please note that you won’t feel comfortable watching it, but you won’t you do not have. Because what you see in it is not nice and pleasant, but it was a reality nonetheless.
It shows a pair of university students in the main roles. One of them is trying to get to a man who can have an abortion, the other is her best friend, who has decided to stand by her even in the most difficult. Since they are not able to obtain abortion in a legal form, they must resort to such an alternative.
It threatens life and loss of one’s dignity
Young girls are already quite traumatized by their situation, but before the abortion takes place, they have to decide how to get enough money to pay a man who
A man who performs abortions during this period knows that it is something illegal and he could be punished himself. At the same time, however, he realizes that girls have no other choice, so he does not hesitate to abuse and defile their dignity even more. When they don’t have more money to pay for a “procedure,” a friend has to make up for the abortion of the other with violent sex. It only remains to wait a few hours to show whether the girl will survive this experience or bleed to death
The film shows the total loss of human dignity and freedom. And the consequences are severe. Having an abortion in front of your best friend and under the hands of an unpleasant man who will let you die peacefully in a hotel requires reaching to the bottom. Are professional abortions performed in hospitals under the supervision of doctors such an evil that they still divide society into two camps today?
