Manchester United might have fallen to defeat in Los Angeles, via a late winner from Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, but post-match, Erik ten Hag was sanguine about his team’s pre-season progress.
Rasmus Hojlund scored a fine opener within 10 minutes of kick-off, and the Reds stitched together a number of pleasing moves throughout a keenly contested first 45.
Arsenal drew level through Gabriel Jesus and then edged ahead via Martinelli’s aforementioned 81st-minute clincher, but the boss was reasonably satisfied with what he deemed a “good performance”.
But what about our fans? There were 62,486 present in the SoFi Stadium in California, and millions more watching around the world.
At full-time, we asked them to nominate the United players that had impressed them in each half. Scroll down for the results of our survey…
FIRST HALF – ROCK ‘N’ ROLL RASMUS
By far the Reds’ best moment of the opening period came when Marcus Rashford stirred memories of the FA Cup final with a brilliant ball over the top of the opposition defence, setting up a one-on-one for Rasmus Hojlund against Gunners youngster Ayden Heaven.
The Dane surged past his opponent and forced the ball home, underneath the body of goalkeeper Karl Hein.
Sadly, Rasmus had to leave the field shortly after, but his early contribution was enough to earn him a healthy share of the votes in our fan poll to determine United’s outstanding player of the first half.
Harry Amass and Mason Mount also polled strongly, with Toby Collyer not far behind. There was also pronounced support for Andre Onana, Leny Yoro and Amad.
SECOND HALF – SANCHO STANDS OUT
Erik ten Hag made the anticipated raft of changes at half-time – as is common for the early weeks of pre-season – with only Andre Onana retained in the XI.
It was a more inexperienced line-up, populated by five aspiring Academy players, but one that competed well and was unfortunate to go behind during the final 10 minutes.
There were some particularly encouraging individual performances, according to our voting audience, with Jadon Sancho established as United’s best player during the second half.
Jonny Evans was second, while Christian Eriksen and Maxi Oyedele – fresh from his fine assist for Joe Hugill against Rangers – vied for the final spot on our podium.
