Who will Texas play next?
In the reconstructed College Football Playoff format, 12 teams will fight for the CFP National Championship Trophy. Given this setup, four teams were given byes and automatically advance to the second round. These byes are awarded to the four highest-ranked conference champions.
Following their first-round win, Texas will face one of those conference champions.
No. 5 Texas vs. No. 4 Arizona State
After defeating Iowa State in the Big 12 title game, the Arizona State Sun Devils were given an automatic bid to the College Football Playoff. As the fourth-highest-ranked conference champion, they were awarded the No. 4 seed and a bye in Round 1 of the CFP.

The Sun Devils are one of college football’s best Cinderella stories this season. Coming into the year, they were ranked dead last in the Big 12 by media members and were not even in the discussion for the College Football Playoff. Eleven wins and one conference championship later, here we are.
Arizona State will “host” Texas in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Jan. 1. This will be their first appearance in the CFP and first New Year’s Six bowl game this century. To say this is a big game for the Sun Devils would be an understatement.
