Apple recently announced a new system on a chip (SoC) at WWDC 2023 and it’s not the highly anticipated M3 chip. The new chip is called “M2 Ultra” and is the largest and most capable chip Apple has ever created.
The M2 Ultra chipset will be incorporated in the new Mac Studio and Mac Pro, making them the “most powerful Mac desktops ever made.” With M2 Ultra powering the new Mac Pro, the Mac transition to Apple silicon is now complete.
Apple’s most capable chip yet!
The new M2 Ultra chip is built using Apple’s second-generation 5nm process, which utilises UltraFusion technology to connect the die of two M2 Max chips to double performance. The M2 Ultra consists of 134 billion transistors, which is 20 billion more than M1 Ultra SoC.
M2 Ultra’s unified memory architecture supports up to a breakthrough 192GB of memory capacity, 50 percent more than its predecessor. The new M2 Ultra also features 800GB/s of memory bandwidth, twice that of M2 Max. Apple claims that the M2 Ultra SoC takes Mac performance to a “whole new level.”
Apple M2 Ultra Specifications
The M2 Ultra features a 24-core CPU with 16 next-gen performance cores and eight next-gen efficiency cores. Apple claims that the M2 Ultra chip will deliver up to 20 percent faster performance than the M1 Ultra SoC. The GPU on the M2 Ultra packs up to a 76-core GPU that’s up to 30 percent faster than the M1 Ultra.
Additionally, the 32-core neural engine, which is up to 40 percent faster than its predecessor. It also features a media engine with twice the capabilities of M2 Max for blazing ProRes acceleration. Apple says, “Rendering 3D effects using Octane on Mac Studio with M2 Ultra is up to 3x faster than Mac Studio with M1 Ultra.”
If the numbers are accurate, the new M2 Ultra chip should offer considerable gains in performance over its predecessor. The M2 Ultra will also touted to offer new power efficiency gains. The M2 Ultra will arrive on the new Mac Studio and Mac Pro first.
