Under-display fingerprint scanners are one of the key features of Android flagship smartphones, from 2018. However, the technology has been somewhat stagnant for a long time, as it is very difficult to innovate in a fingerprint scanner. But recently Xiaomi received the patent of a new fingerprint scanning technology, which allows the user to use the sensor anywhere on the screen.
This is great news for the end user , as you do not have to try many times to unlock your phone, because you place your finger precisely on the under-display fingerprint scanner so that it can read it. With the technology patented by Xiaomi you will be able to unlock the device, wherever you touch your finger.
In the patent, Xiaomi shows how the technology works, as it will have a series of transmitters infrared LED below the capacitive touch screen layer and above the normal AMOLED display. The array of infrared light receivers will be located above the LED infrared light transmitters. All of the above mentioned LED transmitters and receivers are the basic components for the under-display fingerprint scanner.
When the user wants to scan his fingerprint on the screen, he touches the screen with his finger, the capacitive touch screen records the touch, position and shape of the fingertip and then the array of infrared LED light transmitters emits light outside the screen only in the shape and position of the fingertip. Note that the surrounding LED light transmitters will not light up in this case.
The infrared light will then be reflected back on contact with the fingertip and will reach the infrared light receivers. Infrared speed data will then be used to map the fingerprint contour and compare with the stored fingerprint data to verify if the user is the same as the one who saved the data. If valid, the user will be able to unlock the smartphone from anywhere on the screen.
