Most web browsers come with one or more default search engines and the same goes for Chromium based browsers such as Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. Users used to be able to remove or delete a default search engine if they did not want to for some reason.
The recent Chromium 97 update made a change in these settings and the option to remove the default search engine is no longer present. The developer who is responsible for this change states:
At this time, anyone can remove a default search engine with a few clicks in the browser settings. However, the result is disastrous, as even if you use the button to add a default engine, you can not configure it for the page of the new tab or for other special links. And therefore, we have to make the removal either more difficult (requires confirmation) or impossible (no menu option). I preferred the second one.
However, although the change was made with good intentions, some users are already complaining about problems. For example, Filipa Nunes in the Chrome forum reports that the default search engine automatically changes to Yahoo when they try to set it to something else. However, the option will revert as the developer states in Chrome 98 or Chrome 99.
