As of 30 September, Uber began providing its services in two other regional cities. After Prague and Brno, customers can also ride in Ostrava and Pilsen . Měšec.cz was the first to inform about the novelty , stating that the service is available within a radius of about 100 kilometers from the mentioned cities.
On the official website the change has not yet been reflected (on Thursday 30 September at 11:30) – only Prague and Brno still figure here. Therefore, we downloaded the mobile application and tried to request rides within Ostrava and Pilsen. We can therefore confirm that the service is actually available in both of these cities.
Uber in Ostrava and Pilsen
Although Ostrava is larger (284,982 inhabitants and an area of 214.23 km²) than Pilsen (175,219 inhabitants and an area of 137.65 km²) , customers from the Moravian – Silesian metropolis can ride a little cheaper. According to the Uber application, the basic prices look like this:
Ostrava :
- Basic fare (boarding rate) – 20 CZK
- Price per kilometer driven – 23 CZK
- Price per minute of waiting – 3 CZK (when waiting longer than 2 minutes)
- Minimum fare: 90 CZK
Pilsen:
- Basic fare (rate for entry) – 25 CZK
- Price per kilometer of drive – 27 CZK
- Price per minute of waiting – 3 CZK (when waiting longer than 2 minutes)
- Minimum fare: 100 CZK

As is customary for alternative taxi services, rates may vary according to current supply and demand , time of day and other factors. On the same route, customers can often pay fundamentally different amounts at different times.
Available in both cities only the basic version of the service – UberX – offering “ordinary cars at an affordable price”. Uber Comfort (“newer cars with more legroom”), UberXL (“affordable SUV”) and Uber Black (“top cars with private drivers”) are also available in Prague.
Competitive segment of alternative taxi services
Na Uber Competitive platforms in the form of Estonian Bolt and Czech Liftag are already waiting in both cities. Customers will have a choice of at least three very similar services, which is definitely to the benefit of the case.

In the United States, it has a 71% share of the shared transportation market and a 22% share of the food delivery segment. In the area of shared economy, it has become so prominent that some changes in various sectors have been described as “uberisation”.
Like other similar companies, Uber has been criticized in the past for treating drivers as independent contractors, disrupting taxi business and aggravating congestion. The company has also been criticized for various unethical practices and for ignoring local regulations. In most cases, however, it has dealt with the problems and adapted to the legislation.
