In 2020, YouTube decided not to do its annual retrospective, the so-called Rewind, because of the pandemic. Of course, the scene was one of few celebrations, just a bad time to leave behind. With 2021 coming to an end, however, Google has announced that the decision is no longer momentary: YouTube will no longer do Rewinds and this time the reason is not the coronavirus. This does not mean, however, that the platform will completely abandon the idea of recapitulating the year’s events. To do this, YouTube will adopt a “different and up-to-date kind of experience.” Although it has not explicitly mentioned the reasons why Google abolished YouTube Rewind seem to be clear: over the years, content has become the target of much controversy.
