В събота подводният вулкан Хунга Тонга Хунга Хаапай изригна до тихоокеанското кралство Тонга и предизвика цунами с височина 1.20 метра, което достигна столицата на кралството.
Подводният вулкан се намира край един от необитаемите острови от архипелага, на около 65 километра от столицата. В резултат на изригването големи приливни вълни достигнаха бреговете на Нова Зеландия, а цунами също с височина от около 1.20 метра заля югозападното крайбрежие на Япония, съобщи БТА.
Тревога за цунами бе издадена в големи части на Тихия океан, в това число и Чили, Хавай, Аляска и Фиджи. Беше съобщено, че двама души са се удавили близо до брега в Северно Перу заради необичайно високите вълни. В неделя ударната вълна от изригването на подводния вулкан достигна и Гърция.
