ช่วงค่ำเมื่อ 2 วันก่อนเกิดเหตุการณ์ลักลอบเผาไร่อ้อยท้ายหมู่บ้านห้วยไผ่ ต.น้ำพอง อ.น้ำพอง จ.ขอนแก่น ทำให้ฝุ่นละอองควันไฟจำนวนมาก ลอยเข้ามาตกในบริเวณบ้านจำนวนมาก
ไทยพีบีเอสลงพื้นที่ตรวจสอบก็พบไร่อ้อยอยู่ในสภาพถูกเผา รอตัดส่งโรงงาน และอยู่ห่างจากบ้านเรือนชาวบ้านเพียง 10 ม. เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นฝ่ายปกครองอำเภอน้ำพอง ระบุว่า เป็นการลักลอบเผาในพื้นที่ครั้งแรก พรุงนี้จะเรียกเจ้าของที่ดินมาสอบปากคำว่ามีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องหรือไม่ และ คาดว่าเดือน ก.พ. ถึงเดือน มี.ค. การเผาจะรุนแรงมากขึ้น
