10 games you may have missed this year

Games

A zoo simulation with a difference, relaxing city planning and a dating dungeon crawler – you should check out these 10 games.

Even though we’d like to, we can’t report on every game that will be released in a year. That’s why we take the opportunity to offer you 10 great games that you may not have heard of – and there are also a few honorable mentions at the end.

Exo One

One of the most surprising games this year was – at least for me – Exo One. Actually, you don’t do that much, apart from navigating a small ball with momentum over foreign planets. You catapult yourself from planet to planet via strange constructions, all of which are breathtakingly designed.

The whole thing is embedded in a framework story, which is told indirectly, among other things, via journalistic contributions. Here and there you learn something about space programs or the “gravity drive” of the ball. But you don’t get the content simply served, so there’s plenty of room for interpretation. Exo One is meditative and an exciting gaming experience that doesn’t require much action.

Exo One costs 16.99 euros at Microsoft for Xbox Series X/S and PC, but is also in the game passport included. At Steam costs it 15.99 euros.

Let’s build a Zoo

Who

Building Games will find joy, challenges and even food for thought here. Because at Let’s build a Zoo it’s not just about expanding and designing your zoo and earning more money with more visitors. It’s about moral decisions, equality, environmental awareness and animal welfare. Do I build wind turbines or do I prefer to tap into the power line of the local grid? Do I buy rare animal species on the black market, or do I save animals from forest fires?

Added to this is the possibility to use a CRISPR station to create wild crossbreeds between all sorts of animals: pig with snake, goose with lion – there are only moral limits. Everything happens quickly, you always have to keep track of the enclosure, animals, food and workers. This is very engaging and surprisingly deep – plus it’s very cute when a pixel bunny bounces on a trampoline.

Let’s build a Zoo costs around 16 Euro and is at Steam and in Epic Game Store available.

It Takes Two

Who won this year’s The Game Awards arrived It Takes Two

not over. As the name suggests, for this successful

Co-op game two players . Together you slip into the role of a quarreling couple who are about to divorce. The daughter’s desire for peace turns them into dolls that have to get into the house through the garden, as in “Darling, I Shrunk the Children”.

They meet all sorts of warlike squirrels and wasps, float over ball pools, slide through enchanting snowy landscapes (caught in a snow globe) and compete against a monkey-astronaut that has come to life -Doll on. The skills of the two complement each other and only together can opponents be defeated and puzzles solved. As the game progresses, however, it becomes increasingly clear that the behavior of the two quarrelers is at least questionable, sometimes even repulsive. In contrast to the cute look, there were scenes that emotionally affected me – but the gaming experience was all the more intense.

It Takes Two is a EA Game and therefore requires a Origin account. The positive thing is that only one of the two players has to buy the game, the other person can make friends via . -Pass

turn on. It is for PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Series X/ S (included with EA Play), and PC ( Origin and Steam) for 39.99 euros available. However, it is always available in the sale for around 25 euros.

Geotastic

Ok – it’s a bit cheated, because

Geotastic has been around for October 2020. Also, the idea isn’t new because it’s a free variant of GeoGuessr

. Nevertheless, I didn’t want to withhold this project from you, because it didn’t really gain a foothold until 2021. The principle itself is simple: You land via Google Streetview somewhere in the world and need to find out as precisely as possible where you are. I’ve played both games so much during the pandemic that just looking at the poles that the Google car’s camera sits on could tell me if I’m in Kazakhstan or Mongolia – don’t judge, I’ve just been addicting.

The closer you place your marker to the correct target, the more points you get. In different game modes you can compete against friends or other players from all over the world, there is also a Battle Royal mode. Developed Geotatsic from German

Eduard But, who (still) finances the game entirely through donations. You only need one account, you don’t have to pay anything – and that makes it a real alternative to GeoGuessr which requires a monthly subscription for full access.

The Eternal Cylinder

A colorful planet full of absurdities is crushed by a huge rolling cylinder. Players have to cope in this world and escape from the threat. You control a group of cute creatures called Trebhums, who can customize their bodies through certain meals. So they can eat grasshopper legs and increase their jumping power. The game has fascinated me with its absurdity alone.

It varies somewhere between Open World Survival and Action-Adventure with puzzle elements. How to use their limited time until the cylinder has crushed everything is up to the players themselves. Do you try to discover the cylinder’s origins or do you discover the world before it is destroyed? Again and again you can stop the reel for a while by activating towers. But if you cross a border on the map, it rolls on and you have to flee.

The Eternal Cylinder is for PS4, Xbox One and Series X/S and in Epic Game Store for about

25 Euro.

Sable

If you were mean, you would Sable simply as a

Breath of the Wild clone stamp. True, many elements like explore, solve puzzles

and climbing reminds me of the Zelda part. But Sable impresses with its unique graphic style and successful storytelling.

Sometimes it’s just enough for me to jet through the amazing desert landscapes on my cool hoverbike, climb mountains and to see the world from above. This also makes up for the fact that the puzzles are not a serious challenge. It lives all the more from its characters and stories.

Sable is for 25 Euro for computers (Steam and Epic) and Microsoft’s Xbox One, Series X/S and PC released. It is also included in Game Pass.

Boyfriend Dungeon

Here someone has reached deep into the genre mix box, because the game connects Dungeon Crawler with Dating Sim

. Players spend a summer with their cousin and quickly find out that there is a dungeon full of strange creatures under the local mall. The monsters you fight your way down floor by floor look like everyday objects, but they invoke fear and terror in our character.

You can defend yourself with very special weapons. They are individuals who can switch between their weapon form and their (usually) human form. We can get to know them, date them, and strengthen our connection with them by fighting with them. Until the summer is over we have time to solve the mystery of mysterious attacks in the city and flirt with the gun people. It’s as bizarre as it sounds, but that’s what got me hooked. It’s nicely written and good entertainment for a few afternoons.

Boyfriend Dungeon is for about 17 Euro for PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch and Xbox One and Series X/S released. It is included in Game Pass.

Townscaper

This little game is a marvel. Because actually you do nothing here except to create majestic cities or picturesque island villages. Enchanting

colorful houses, bridges, cathedrals and turrets are created with a mouse click or fingertips .

There are no points, there is no time limit and no goal. You can just indulge in the beauty and soothing atmosphere that the little game creates with its lovely graphic style. When it’s very hectic and you just need a little peace and quiet, you’ll find it here. Anyway, I spent a few hours on it without realizing how time flies.

Twonscaper costs depending on the platform 4 to 5 euros and is available for iPhone and iPad in App Store, for Android in Google Play Store, for PC (Steam, Epic and GoG) and for Xbox One or Series X/S appeared. It is also included with Game Pass.

Happy Game

Happy is nothing here, on the contrary you live through it in the new game of Czech studio Amanita Design ( Samorost, Machinarium) 3 nightmares of a child. Toys become disturbingly grinning horror faces that we as players have to twist and pull apart to solve puzzles. The studio stays true to itself. Despite the “spookier” scenario, the figures have the unique Amanita drawing style and everything is accompanied by the creative soundscape that does not require language or writing.

We move from puzzle to puzzle, most of which can be solved by dragging, tapping, flipping switches and combining. They are all absurd and varied and are solved quite intuitively by simply clicking around and seeing what happens. Happy Game

is not the strongest Amanita design game in my opinion, but if you’re as enchanted by her style as I am, you’ll be entertained here as well. If you haven’t played a Czech game yet, you should definitely check out the awesome Machinarium repeat.

Happy Game is for PC (Steam, GoG, itch.io) and Nintendo Switch released and costs

13 euros.

Overboard!

Detective Stories are popular in video games, from

The curse of Baphomet via Sherlock Holmes to Agatha Christie they have been an integral part of for years Adventure Games. Overboard! turns the tables and lets us become a murderess on a cruise. We must do everything we can to remain undetected until the ship docks and we can escape. To do this, tracks must be blurred, people led down the wrong track and witnesses made implausible.

The Studio

Inkle could already with the great “80 Days” convince and join Overboard! an immersive adventure. This is mainly on tablets Recommended because the rounds are quite short and you quickly find yourself wanting to play through it in a different way over and over again. The beautiful animations, creative ideas and well-written dialogues make the game a very entertaining experience.

Overboard! costs 12 euros for PC (Steam and GoG) and Nintendo Switch. For smartphones it costs 7 or 6 euros (Google Play Store and AppStore)

2021 was a pretty strong year for indie games, we can’t name them all here. Nevertheless, I don’t want to omit a few games that are wrongly not featured on this page:
