Every year, talented authors release a host of novels that end up on bestsellers lists everywhere. From memoirsto family dramas, to murder-mysteries, and even romance novels a dude would like—a great story is always well within reach. But what about those of us who (… sorry) prefer to watch the action play out on screen? Well, that’s where screen adaptations come in to save the day.

If you aren’t the reading type, or, hell, maybe you are, and you just want to see if the adaptation lives up to the original, you’re in luck. In 2023, Hollywood is bringing a bunch of beloved novels to the big and small screen. For your viewing pleasure, we’ve rounded up 10 of the best adaptations coming this year. Women Talking (In Theaters)

Women Talking, based on Miriam Toews’ novel, follows a group of women living in an isolated religious community. After the men of the group commit an unspeakable act the women realize they have three choices: do nothing, stay and fight, or leave. The film adaptation is currently available to watch in theaters.

The Pale Blue Eye is adapted from Louis Bayard’s novel of the same name. The film follows Augustus Landor, a seasoned detective, who looks into a string of murders at the United States Military Academy in 1830. Edgar Allen Poe, a young cadet at the time, joins his investigation.

Mayfair Witches is based on Anne Rice’s trilogy, Lives of the Mayfair Witches. The fantasy-thriller series follows Rowan Fielding, a young neurosurgeon, who learns that she is a descendant of witches. When she gains new powers, she has to learn how to adapt to life as a witch while helping her family battle a presence that’s targeted them for years. Mayfair Witches is available to watch on AMC.

A Man Called Otto (In Theaters)

Adapted from the novel A Man Called Ove, A Man Called Otto stars Tom Hanks as the neighborhood cynic. After his wife dies, Otto spends most of his time inside cursing the outside world. But when a new family moves in next door, he finds himself in an unlikely friendship with a young pregnant woman.

Knock at the Cabin (In Theaters)

Knock at the Cabin is based on the award-winning novel, The Cabin at the End of the World. The M. Night Shyamalan-directed thriller follows a family who goes on vacation in the woods. Their cabin retreat goes as planned, until armed strangers arrive at their door and demand the family select one member to kill in order to save the world from a looming apocalypse

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (In Theaters)

The children’s story you grew up with gets a gruesome update in Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. The new horror film follows a “feral and bloodthirsty” Pooh-bear who’s hellbent on terrorizing Christopher Robin and his friends. Fun?

The Lying Life of Adults

The Lying Life of Adults is a coming-of-age series set in the ’90s. The show is based on Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, following a girl named Giovanna’s transition from a child to a young adult while living in Naples, Italy.

Dear Edward (February 3)

Dear Edward comes from Ann Napolitano’s novel of the same name. The television adaptation follows the harrowing story of Edward Adler, a young boy who survives a plane crash that kills everyone else on board. The drama series tracks Edwards life after the incident, as he tries to regain a sense of normalcy.

Daisy Jones & The Six (March 3)

Daisy Jones & The Six, inspired by Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel of the same name, follows a rowdy ’70s band that is loosely based on Fleetwood Mac. The upcoming miniseries follows the band’s heyday and the time after their breakup, as they try to make sense of what went wrong.

White House Plumbers (March 2023)

Adapted from Egil ‘Bud’ Krogh’s memoir, Integrity, White House Plumbers is a miniseries coming to HBO this year. The show follows the infamous Watergate scandal, which Krogh experienced firsthand when he was chosen to investigate the leaks of top-secret documents to the press.
