Report: Packers’ Marquez Valdes-Scantling Expected to Hit IR with Hamstring Injury

The Green Bay Packers will reportedly be without wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling for multiple weeks.

Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Valdes-Scantling is expected to land on injured reserve with a hamstring issue.

Per NFL rules, players on injured reserve are required to miss a minimum of three weeks. That means the earliest Valdes-Scantling would be eligible to return is after Week 6.

Valdes-Scantling has gotten off to a slow start in 2021, though he did have his best game in the Packers’ 30-28 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3. The 26-year-old had a 47-yard reception and caught a 12-yard touchdown from Aaron Rodgers in the fourth quarter.

Head coach Matt LaFleur told reporters on Monday the team would know more about the extent of Valdes-Scantling’s injury after he underwent a scan.

The Packers had already ruled Valdes-Scantling out for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers after he was unable to practice this week.

A fifth-round draft pick by the Packers in 2018, Valdes-Scantling has been used primarily as a downfield option in the offense. The South Florida alum has averaged 17.5 yards per reception in 51 career games. He led the NFL with 20.9 yards per catch and set a career-high in yards (690) and touchdowns (six) in 2020.

With Valdes-Scantling unavailable, the Packers will likely turn to a combination of Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb as secondary options behind Davante Adams.

Adams has been, by far, Rodgers’ favorite target so far this season. His 25 receptions are 15 more than anyone else on the team. He’s also the only player with at least 100 yards through the first three games.

The Packers will play the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals and Chicago Bears in their next three games.
