Illegal
miners are allegedly behind reported robberies on the M1 at the Crown
Interchange on Tuesday, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has said.
Several disturbing messages and
voice notes about five armed men going from car to car and robbing motorists
were widely shared on social media.

In one of the voice notes, it
was claimed some motorists had also crashed their cars and one was hit in the
back of his head.
“After receiving these
reports, the JMPD tactical response unit was deployed to the area to search for
the suspects,” said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla.
He added:
During the search, a group of individuals was observed fleeing into a shaft on the embankment of the freeway. This group is suspected to be involved in illegal mining activities, and it is believed that the armed individuals responsible for robbing the motorists may be linked to this illegal mining activity.
Fihla urged victims to come
forward and open cases.
National police commissioner
General Fannie Masemola has since ordered the deployment of officers along
Gauteng’s highways and other strategic
locations during peak hour traffic.
“The police have deployed the
Highway Patrol, SAPS Airwing, and Gauteng Flying Squad units to monitor and
conduct regular patrols along the identified routes,” national police
spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said.
By Tuesday afternoon, no cases
had been reported, Mathe added.
“Engagements with the JMPD and other law
enforcement agencies are ongoing in an effort to curb further incidents. Police
tracking teams are on the ground searching for these suspects.”
