The author of the Facebook leaks revealed her identity. He accuses the company of putting profits before safety

Former Facebook analyst Frances Haugen copied the documents revealing research on how the platform contributes to increasing polarization in society and how using Instagram, which belongs to Facebook, negatively affects the psyche of teenagers. The woman revealed her identity on CBS.

Frances Haugen copied thousands of pages of company papers, revealing research on how the platform amplifies hate speech and how it can be harmful to teenagers. The woman released these documents to The Wall Street Journal, which led to the publication of a series of articles about the company’s operation.

On Monday, a 37-year-old Facebook analyst gave CBS interview, thus revealing his identity in the program “60 minutes”.

As Haugen said, Facebook prioritized the site’s results over security, not paying attention to disturbing research results.

– What I have seen over and over on Facebook are conflicts of interest between what is good for people and what is good for Facebook – explained the woman in an interview. – And Facebook has repeatedly decided to act in terms of its own interests, such as earning more money – Haugen emphasized in an interview with a CBS journalist.

– Facebook realized that if they changed the algorithm to a safer algorithm, people would spend less time on the platform, click less ads, and therefore – the company would make less money, ‘Huagen told on the air.

On Tuesday, a former analyst is due to testify in front of the Senate’s trade subcommittee. The meeting will be devoted to children’s safety online, and Huagen will speak on a study by Facebook that shows the negative effects of Instagram use on the mental health of adolescents.
