Good news! Mothers could transmit COVID-19 antibodies to infants, according to two recent studies. The first study was conducted by the University of Massachusetts, and the second was conducted by the Carmel Medical Center in Israel.
The UoM study was published Friday in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, while the Israeli study was published last month in the journal JAMA Network. However, there are small differences between the two studies. The Carmel Medical Center study specifically states that pregnant women can transmit COVID antibodies to their babies if they receive the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine during the second trimester of pregnancy.
UoM research says mothers who are vaccinated against the virus could transmit antibodies to their young sons and daughters through breastfeeding.
It should be noted that coronavirus mRNA vaccines are safe for pregnant women, according to a published study in the New England Journal of Medicine, which states that there is no risk factor.
All antibodies have been transmitted to babies
The above-mentioned Israeli study was conducted between May and July 2021 and targeted 130 women who received the vaccine in the second trimester of pregnancy.
Research has shown that all antibodies have were transmitted to their babies up to the time of birth, which implies that ‘ COVID-19 mRNA vaccine administration during the second trimester is associated with a maternal humoral immune response that is sustained during labor. ”
All women were evaluated at least 24 weeks of pregnancy and 7 days after receiving the second COVID-19 vaccine. None of them were known to be previously infected with coronavirus. The study concludes that vaccination during the second trimester strengthens the mother’s protection and the safety of the newborn during the pandemic. Their study also found that antibodies can be detected in infants and young children between the ages of 1.5 months and almost two years.
Thirty women, mostly health workers , participated in the study and received the vaccine between January and April last year. Three of them reported having previously had COVID at some point since the beginning of the pandemic.
Breast milk and blood samples were provided by women before they were vaccinated “two to three weeks after the first dose of vaccine and three weeks after the second dose”. The samples of breast milk were able to neutralize the protein peak of SARS-CoV-2 and ‘confer passive immunity on the lactating infant’ , concludes the study.
