Biathlete Benedikt Doll finished second in the sprint at the home World Cup in Ruhpolding, his best result so far in the Olympic winter.

Ruhpolding – The 31-year-old ex-world champion was only 7.2 seconds short of the third win of his career on Thursday . The basis for the top result was a flawless shooting. The strong runner from the Black Forest had only done that five times in his career and came very close to Quentin Fillon Maillet from France, who was leading in the overall World Cup and secured the win. Behind Doll, Anton Smolski from Belarus finished third with one penalty.

For Doll it was the absence of the stars from Norway around Johannes Thingnes Bö, who are all completing a high-altitude training camp and refrained from starting in Ruhpolding, a liberation. Previously, the veteran had only made it into the top ten once this season. Just in time, a good three weeks before the start of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, Doll is back. In Erik Lesser (1 penalty), a second German made it up to the front in sixth place and made Johannes Kühn forget about the bitter failure. Germany’s best ski hunter of the past few weeks was absent in Bavaria due to a corona infection found on Wednesday.

The corona-related in front of empty spectator stands The home World Cup that is taking place will continue on Friday (2.30 p.m./ZDF and Eurosport) with the women’s relay. After the disappointing sprint, the women are aiming for a clear improvement.
Franziska Hildebrand finished 17th on Wednesday as the best DSV ski hunter.
