The Ashes: Jos Buttler’s heroic resistance in vain as Australia hammer England in Adelaide to go 2-0 up

England’s valiant resistance went in vain as they were bundled out for 192 with just 20.1 overs left to go on Day 5 of the Adelaide pink-ball Test as Australia sealed a 275-run victory and a 2-0 lead in the 5-match Ashes series. Jos Buttler batted out 207 balls for his 26 but Jhye Richardson picked up his maiden five-wicket haul to inspire the hosts to a memorable victory.

Pink-ball Test Day 5: Highlights

Steve Smith will be a happy man as he notched up another win as Australia’s Test captain, this time as a stand-in skipper in place of Pat Cummins, as he marshalled the troops well, showcasing a lot of patience on the final day.

Meanwhile, Australia extended their finer run in day-night Tests, winning 9 out of 9 matches with the pink ball.

England began the day on 82/4 with Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope resuming their innings. A chance of a draw seemed improbable when the visitors lost their overnight batters early on Day 5 but Buttler resisted the Australian charge with a fine piece of blockathon.

Chris Woakes, who was quite ineffective with the ball, was England’s highest-scorer in the second innings with 44 but the top-order’s failure cost England once again in what seems to be a floundering Ashes campaign for the visitors.

It ended in an anti-climax as Buttler got out hit-wicket in the final session. Buttler did not even realize that he had stepped on the stumps and looked for a single but Australia started celebrating, knowing a victory was just a formality after the wicketkeeper-batsman fell.

What a way to end an epic innings!

England were dealt a heavy blow when they lost captain Joe Root for 26 towards the end of Day 4. Root, who overcame an abdomen injury after undergoing scans on Sunday morning, was hit on the box by a Mitchell Starc delivery shortly after which he fell during the final delivery of the day’s play.

Set 486 runs to win at the Adelaide Oval, England was 142-6 after the opening session. The visitors resumed on 82-4 but it took just 15 balls for the first crack to appear when Mitchell Starc removed Ollie Pope (4), who edged to Steve Smith at second slip. Lyon ended Stokes’s resistance by trapping the all-rounder LBW.

Meanwhile, Australia flexed their muscles with the bat with Marnus Labuschange leading from the front, hitting a hundred and following it up with a fifty in the second innings. Labuschagne became the first man to hit 3 hundreds in pink-ball Tests.

Stand-in captain Smith and opener David Warner got out in their nineties as Australia posted 473/9 declared in the first innings after which Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon shared 7 wickets between them to bowl England out for 236.

Australia batted again and a quickfire fifty from Travis Head helped them post 230 for 9 declared.

Cummins, Hazlewood boost for Australia

The two teams will meet in Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test and Australia will be bolstered by the availability of captain Pat Cummins and fellow pacer Josh Hazlewood.

Pat Cummins missed the 2nd Test in Adelaide after coming in close contact with a Covid-19 positive person at an Adelaide restaurant on the eve of the pink-ball match. On the other hand, Josh Hazlewood picked up a side strain that saw him miss the 2nd Test. Steve Smith led the team in the absence of Cummins.
