David De Gea: The fans ‘deserved the win’

David De Gea lauded the support of the fans and the determination shown by his teammates in the Reds’ 1-0 Premier League win over West Ham at Old Trafford.

Substitute Marcus Rashford was on hand to tap in Edinson Cavani’s dangerous cross at the back post in the final minute of stoppage time, sealing the three points for Ralf Rangnick’s side.

Reacting to the late winner on MUTV, De Gea emphasised how important it was: “It is a massive goal and a massive win for us.

“We trust in ourselves and fight until the end, and we scored a beautiful goal.”

The Spaniard was quick to praise the crowd and felt that they helped get United over the line.

He added: “[The fans] keep pushing the team. They keep shouting and that gave us a bit more energy at the end of the game.

“They were great for the whole game, and they deserved the win.”

The important win saw the Reds keep our first Premier League clean sheet since the 1-0 away win at Norwich on 11 December.

De Gea was impressed by the resilience shown by the United backline, and their ability to keep one of the top-flight’s in-form teams quiet.

“Keeping a clean sheet was massive for us,” he said. “We didn’t concede many chances today and we controlled the game very well.

“We controlled the game from the beginning, and I was feeling the game was there for us.”

The victory over West Ham sees the Reds leapfrog the Londoners in the fourth position in the Premier League. Reacting to the important win De Gea feels that it can act as a springboard for the rest of the season.

“Hopefully the game gives us more confidence, more trust in ourselves.

“From today, let’s see if we can win more games in a row, control games more and keep more clean sheets.”
