The number of foreign students registered at universities and colleges in the United States in the 2019/2020 school year was 372,532, while in the previous school year, of 2018/2019, this number was slightly higher: 377,943. It is worth remembering that the US issues visas for international students whose number is close to one million currently.
It is noticeable that even with the pandemic these numbers were almost similar, but lower in 2019/2020 . Undoubtedly, in the US there are many world-renowned colleges and schools that offer high quality higher education – which lives up to this great demand by people from several countries, including Brazil.
Most of these international students are of Chinese and Indian origin, and account for, on average, 1/3 of the total number of people enrolled in universities. Another interesting fact is that, of the total number of international students, 1/3 of them search for postgraduate courses, and generally the most sought after are engineering and computer science programs.
These international students in the United States pay some of the highest tuition fees to universities and colleges in the country, averaging $24,914 (per year). This may explain why we see large numbers of international students at colleges like UCLA and USC Los Angeles. This data generates a lot of controversy since American students pay much less and many of them study with subsidies or loans from the American government or from the universities themselves. Typically, 30% of American families pay their children’s tuition through parental savings savings, while 31% depend on subsidies and scholarships.
With the pandemic came some decisions policies, whether in the Trump or Biden era, that caused many international students to take a break from their studies between 2020 and 2021. depending on the trajectory of the pandemic”, revealed says Dr. Luciana Dar, Brazilian educational consultant in the US. It is important to know that universities have struggled with policies considered harmful to international students. It’s very easy to get distracted by political rhetoric, but students should know that universities need them,” he added.
Trying to become an international student within the United States is not easy. The application process is complex and competitive, which means it requires a lot of work and dedication even before starting classes. According to Luciana, it is not a quick process and students must start preparing months or even years in advance and need to stay organized and well informed at all times.
“The process of Applying to US colleges and universities can be lengthy and confusing, and many international students are intimidated by the number of steps required. From SATs, TOEFL and other tests, to essay writings, credential assessment and much more” said Dr. Luciana.
If you want to become an international student within the United States , but cannot meet the high costs and requirements of universities, you may also consider starting your education from a “Community College” within the first two years. You can choose, for example, Glendale College or Santa Monica College in Los Angeles County.
“Community colleges offer students an excellent education at a fraction of the cost and are a great way for international students to start their route to higher education in the US. But for this, the ability to speak and write in academic and professional English is essential”, concluded Dr. Luciana.
The great advantage of the United States in higher education is that there is a wide variety of institutions and educational options, moreover, are all open to diversity and are interested in receiving students from other cultures.
