AEW rolled into Rochester Wednesday night, home of the late Brodie Lee, for an episode of Dynamite headlined by Sammy Guevara vs. Miro for the same TNT Championship once held by The Exalted One.

On a night dedicated to their former leader, was The Dark Order able to thwart Hardy Family Office in a massive 16-man tag team match in which they teamed with Orange Cassidy? More importantly, were they able to coexist long enough to do so?

Elsewhere, the faction’s lone female member Anna Jay partnered with Tay Conti to battle The Bunny and Penelope Ford in the culmination of a month-long rivalry.

What went else went down on a special edition of Dynamite? Find out now with this recap of the September 29 episode.

CM Punk joined Excalibur, Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone at the announce position before Adam Cole and Jungle Boy took to the squared circle for the night’s first match.

Young Jack Perry outwrestled Cole early, driving the former world champion to the floor in an attempt to regroup. It worked as Cole seized control of the bout and worked Jungle Boy over with a neck vice. The Casino Battle Royale delivered a belly-to-belly overhead suplex and added a German for two.

Jungle Boy delivered a hurricanrana over the top and off the apron, to which Cole responded with a superkick. A Panama Sunrise followed by the babyface kicked out at two. Cole tried for the Boom but Jungle Boy ducked and applied the Snare Trap. Cole escaped, delivered a cheap low blow and finally executed the Boom for the pinfall victory.

    Result

    Cole defeated Jungle Boy

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

On paper, Cole vs. Jungle Boy sounds awesome and the match did not disappoint.

An action-packed, dramatic battle between one of the top stars in the company and one of its hottest young competitors, it kept the fans invested and left them wondering if the underdog would pull off the improbably upset.

He did not, but Cole’s cheap low blow proved Jungle Boy not only hung with him but had him on the ropes to such an extent that he had to resort to an underhanded tactic to secure the win. It protected Jungle Boy’s credibility and gave Cole another quality win in his young AEW career. You cannot ask for more than that in an energetic bout right out of the gate.

The Elite joined a victorious Cole for a post-match promo.

After Cole reminded the audience of his undefeated record, AEW world champion Kenny Omega discussed his match with Bryan Danielson. The American Dragon interrupted the promo and said, despite both his and the fans’ desire for a rematch with Omega, it appears as though the world champ doesn’t have the balls to go through with it.

Bryan challenged any member of The Elite to a match on Rampage but Omega tried to goad him into a fight tonight. Danielson called on Christian Cage, Luchasaurus, Frankie Kazarian, Jungle Boy and Marko Stunt to back him up as he drove the heels up the ramp.

    Grade

    C

    Analysis

This didn’t really accomplish anything new but it did demonstrate just how over Bryan is with the AEW faithful. For a guy who once was considered more of a wrestler than a talker, his ability to cut a promo enthralls the audience is undeniable.

He had the fans chanting “Kenny No-Balls” at a thunderous level, infuriating the champion like The Rock used to with his most hated rivals.

The inevitable rematch between Danielson and Omega will be extraordinary but the key will be keeping fans hungry for it. This was a step in the right direction, but it will need to evolve to ensure it stays that way.

Boos engulfed the arena as Cody Rhodes made his way to the ring, accompanied by wife Brandi, coach Arn Anderson and partner “Big Shotty” Lee Johnson for his match against Matt Sydal and Dante Martin.

Martin and Sydal controlled the match during the break, working over Lee. A tag to Rhodes sparked a comeback for The Nightmare Family but the fans greeted any offense by Cody with a chorus of boos. Martin, as he has so many times, wowed the audience with a high-flying offense that kept even the former two-time TNT champion reeling.

Johnson tagged himself in, delivered a fisherman buster, driving his opponent into his knee. He pinned Martin for the victory seconds later.

After the match, Tony Schiavone joined Rhodes, Johnson and Anderson in the center of the ring as the fans continued to greet the EVP with a negative reaction. Rhodes called out Malakai Black, but Anderson silenced him and cut a promo that insinuated Rhodes was soft. “I’m Arn Anderson, and all that it implies, and I’ll be damned if I coach a loser.”

The Enforcer left with Johnson, leaving Rhodes to contemplate his words.

    Result

Rhodes and Johnson defeated Martin and Sydal

    Grade

    C

    Analysis

It is time for Rhodes to turn heel. It has been teased at points over the last two years but it never quite happens, for one reason or another. Instead, he comes back as a babyface. Lately, it has been to diminishing results, as evidenced by the boos that greeted him here.

The match was another shining example of Martin’s star quality and proof that Johnson has a bright star of his own.

The post-match promo from Anderson was designed as a wake-up call to Rhodes and the severing of their relationship but if the intent is for him to be a renewed, refreshed and rejuvenated babyface by the end of it all, it will prove ineffective.

Rhodes needs to evolve or AEW will pass him by. It’s in danger of doing so right now.

Jon Moxley, Darby Allin and Eddie Kingston battled Bear Country and Anthony Greene in trios tag team action.

The expedited match saw the babyfaces withstand an early surge from the heels before Moxley pinned Greene for the win. After the match, Sting dropped Greene with a Scorpion Death Drop as Kingston held up a “Brodie Lee” sign.

    Result

Moxley, Kingston and Allin defeated Bear Country and Greene

    Grade

    D

    Analysis

There was entirely too much talent involved for this match to amount to the nothingness that it did.

The work was there, but this meant nothing to any ongoing storylines, nor did it enhance any of the talent involved. It was a match for match’s sake and while that’s not always a bad thing, it was all-too-apparent.

Can we please find something of note for Moxley to do because the guy who shifted the paradigm sure feels like he is being left behind in the wake of newer signings?

The Dark Order nearly allowed their issues to get the best of them on a night so important to the legacy of the late Brodie Lee. When in-fighting between Alex Reynolds and Evil Uno nearly cost the faction and partner Orange Cassidy a victory in a 16-man tag team match against Hardy Family Office, the arrival of Brodie Jr., Anna Jay, Tay Conti and Amanda Huber inspired them to set their differences aside and focus on earning a victory.

John Silver erupted, wiping out the competition and joining Silver to turn Jora Johl inside out. Uno and Stu Grayson delivered Fatality, earning the victory for the team. After the match, Pres10 Vance hoisted Brodie Jr. on his shoulders in celebration and honor of his father.

    Result

The Dark Order (Reynolds, Silver, Grayson, Uno, Vance, Colt Cabana and Alan Angels) and Orange Cassidy defeated Hardy Family Office (Matt Hardy, Jack Evans, Angelico, Private Party, Johl, Butcher and Blade)

    Grade

    A

    Analysis

This was a tribute to Brodie Lee and was never meant to be anything but. Sure, it continued the story of dissension within The Dark Order and served as hype for Cassidy’s Hair vs. Hair match with Evans on Rampage, but it was exactly what it needed to be.

Brodie Jr. and Amanda Huber coming to the ramp to talk sense into Uno, Silver and Co. was excellent and the post-match celebration was the heartwarming stuff that occurs when wrestling is at its best.

Kudos to all involved for this, particular Silver, whose energy elevates everything he is involved in.

A fiery promo from Dan Lambert and The Men of the Year (Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page) saw the latter two reiterate their reign over the company after their victory over Chris Jericho and Jake Hager last Friday on Rampage.

The rivalry between The Bunny, Penelope Ford and the team of Tay Jay (Tay Conti and Anna Jay) wrote its latest chapter Wednesday in tag team action.

The heels controlled the match throughout the commercial break but a late-match flurry by the babyfaces, including a springboard crossbody from Conti, lead them to a victory on the strength of Jay’s Queen Slayer sleeper to Ford.

    Result

Tay Jay defeated Bunny and Ford

    Grade

    C

    Analysis

Tay Jay settled a weeks-long feud with Bunny and Ford in a definitive fashion and in the process, built momentum for themselves. Conti continues to work hard to better herself while Jay shows flashes of a young star who will, one day, be the face of women’s wrestling in AEW.

This was a fun, energetic match if nothing else. Considering the wealth of women’s talent in AEW and the limited number of spots in the title picture, it is becoming more and more apparent that a secondary title or a set of tag titles is appropriate.

MJF, accompanied by Wardlow, cut a promo in which he called himself the No. 1 young star in the company and asserted that he deserves an AEW world title opportunity. Darby Allin, one of the competitors glossed over by the silver-tongued spoiled brat, hit the ring to confront his rival.

MJF delivered a scathing tongue-lashing of Allin, going as far as to reveal the face-painted antihero is straight edge because of the traumatizing death of his uncle in a car accident early in Allin’s life. When the former TNT champion told MJF he would not be broken mentally, the heel stomped off up the ramp, the bully’s need for emotional superiority unfulfilled.

    Grade

    A

    Analysis

MJF was great here, delivering another promo the likes of which probably have the collective sphincter of TNT officials puckered. The guy has been nothing short of extraordinary when garnering heat, thanks to his ability to walk the fine line between acceptable and not.

    And occasionally obliterating it.

The feud with Allin will be superb and the idea of MJF teeing off on Sting verbally is mightily appealing. A feud between two of the top young stars, around whom the future has been built over the last two years, is a welcome addition to a show that has relied a bit too much on new debuts of familiar faces and not enough on fresh ones.

Miro defended the TNT Championship against Sammy Guevara in the night’s main event.

The Redeemer dominated the action early and throughout the commercial, overwhelming The Spanish God with a ferocity and strength advantage that threatened Guevara’s championship aspirations. Guevara fought back, threw himself over the ring post and wiped Miro out on the floor.

Back inside, he delivered a cutter and tried for the GTH but Miro fought out and delivered a big kick for two. The champion removed the turnbuckle pads from multiple corners. Fuego del Sol attempted to intervene but Miro knocked him out.

Guevara sent Miro into the turnbuckle, stunning him before delivering the GTH. Up top, he delivered a 630 senton and won the title by pinfall.

    Result

Guevara defeated Miro to win the title

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

Miro lived and died by removing the turnbuckle pad. It worked for him back at All Out in his match with Eddie Kingston and he had every reason to believe the results would be similar. What he did not account for was Fuego, whom he bullied and beat down week after week, would contribute to his downfall.

It did, poetically, presenting the opening that Guevara took advantage of to score the win.

A great match, strong booking and satisfying finish helped put a bow on an episode that was uneven at times but brought good feelings and raw emotion to the table. Switching the TNT Championship on a show dedicated to Brodie Lee was the right call, even as it leaves questions about Miro’s future moving forward.
