Amber Filary Sets New Under-Ice Freediving World Record

South African freediver Amber Filary this past weekend set a new Guinness World Record — women’s and men’s — for the longest under-ice swim with no fins, no weights (not even a neck weight) and wearing only a swimsuit.

Filary swam 90m (295ft) in a frozen lake near Kongsberg, Norway, surpassing Czech freediver David Vencl’s February 2021 record of nearly 81m (265.5ft).

The longest distance Amber did in training was 100m/328ft, but the team wanted to make sure she would manage to set a record on the actual day even if her nerves got to her, according to freediving instructor Arve Gravningen, the owner of Fridykker.com and organizer of the attempt:

“She even had energy left at the end of the swim to give two thumbs up to the camera before breaking the surface.”

Filary’s team are already planning to set another record of 100m or more next year.

You can watch a video of her swim below, or check out Filary’s crowdfunding page.
