At the end of 2021, a lot was said about a possible ‘escape’ from AMD to Samsung’s lines, in order to increase profit margins, and of course, no having to deal with TSMC’s always limited production quota.
After all, TSMC is the most desired semiconductor manufacturer on the planet, and therefore, it is not always easy to be able to outline a release schedule, when there are so many dogs (with money) to a bone. In fact, even Intel now has signed contracts with TSMC, so it would be expected that, with an increasingly close partnership with Samsung, that AMD would move its bags and luggage, or at least share production. .
But not! It seems that the alliance between AMD and TSMC has never been stronger. Therefore, the next new generation Ryzen will be based on the most advanced 5nm lines of the giant TSMC.
- Graphics Cards: End of the crisis in sight in 2022? Perhaps!
AMD confirmed! Zen 4 based on 5nm process (optimized)
Therefore, during CES 2022, the CEO from AMD (Dr. Lisa Su) confirmed that to remain competitive, the company will continue to rely on TSMC’s lines. This time, with a 5nm process optimized for the Zen 4 architecture, which apparently will hit the market in 2D but also 3D versions. (With and without 3D VCache).
Before that, we will still have products based on 6nm from the same TSMC, more specifically, new RDNA2 graphics cards, and probably a Ryzen 5000 refresh.
However, in order to secure orders, and have some funds for research and development, so far, TSMC has already accepted advance payments from AMD, Apple, NVIDIA and Qualcomm, worth 5.44 billion dollars.
Also, what do you think about all this? Good move on AMD’s part? Or would it be just as good, or better, to opt for AMD, and pass the savings on to the consumer?

I was interested in computers from a very young age and technology in general, I had my first PC when I was 10 years old and at 15 I built my first tower, since then I never stopped. Whatever technology, I’m in the front row to find out more.
