Bottas: Pressure at Mercedes F1 was 'eating him from the inside'

Valtteri Bottas spent five years at Mercedes F1, in a pressured environment. The Finn reveals that Toto Wolff thought it was good to put pressure on him to keep him at the best level, but the main interested party is rather skeptical about this policy.

“Toto thinks the pressure is good for me. He obviously has known me for a long time. I agree that the pressure for a certain amount of time is good, that it can make you give more of yourself” explains Bottas in the podcast Beyond The Grid.

“But if you have pressure for nine years of your career in Formula 1, year after year, it starts to eat you up from the inside. Toto says that pressure creates diamonds. I think in a way it’s true. But there’s also a limit. There’s a limit to how long during which you can maintain that for your own well-being.”

A new Alfa Romeo driver, Bottas expects to have less pressure in the peloton, and with a different policy ed by Frédéric Vasseur, the director of Sauber Motorsport AG.

“We had good discussions with Fred. I worked with him in Formula 3 and in GP3, we won the GP3 title together. But he understands pilots well. Of course you can’t be like on vacation, you need some pressure!”

Bottas hopes to take advantage of his accumulated F1 knowledge to shine with Alfa Romeo: “For me, it will be really motivating, in a new team, to try to bring my expertise and all the knowledge that I have.”

“I will do it with all the experience I have accumulated with Williams and with Mercedes, so it will be really interesting and exciting. It will be the pressure, on my side, to try to reach the positions that we want to obtain.”
